I swear I wanted to give him a chance....I liked the Iris version from the rehearsals, but he really lost the edge, the raw of what made him a rock singer. It's fine, TFATM is an Ok album for what he does now as solo artist. His musicians should have worked better on tones. Lightning Crashes is horrible in that matter. Drum is terrible in that song also.

He should have give it all in only one show instead of touring it. Sometimes he shows glimpses of how good he can sing ( and still be at times), but as a performer well it looks partially fake, tribute to himself. Wish him the best and will always gie him a chance on a record.

I was at the Sydney concert last night - really enjoyable show, Ed can still bring his non-falsetto harder-edged 90's voice when he concentrates smile.gif

His bassist and guitarist did a great job - the heavier songs like Iris and Stage were highlights of the show. I'm not sold on his drummer though, he just doesn't play with the same intensity or hit as hard as CG (Ed must be happy about that - no need for plexiglass lol.gif ).

I saw the cameras and assumed it was Moshcam again, but stoked to see it will actually be a DVD - very cool.

Same setlist as the other shows for those interested - 2hr show.

Agree. From the videos I've seen , there os some good stuff. When he stays and his range, it can be awesome. He also avoids the word "child". Run to the water is nice acoustically like that. Props to Shite towne as well. But LC is totally missed. Too slow at the end, too much flanger on the guitar and the drums at the end don't give justice to the intensity of the moment.

Would like to near Stage, WD, and other rockers full version. The drummer, even if he must be good, ls often too far from rhe vibe of a song. The Dam at otter creek is a good example. He plays the Hi-hat like he does at the early beginning?? No!!! Let the song breath and get its tempo up. Too analytic, maybe i am, but those are songs of my teenager time, if not lifetime. Get them well done.

But Ed looks and sings better than the Alive era, this is sure.

A review from Auckland, NZ. No Throwing Copper performance here. Just Ed and Chris on bass.

QUOTE
Ed Kowalczyk – The Tuning Fork February 14, 2014

It was appropriate that former Live front man Ed Kowalczyk performed at Auckland’s Tuning Fork on Valentine’s Day, as it was a virtual love-fest between him and his adoring fans.

Having been unceremoniously ejected from the band he led for almost 20 years, Ed Kowalczyk has been forced to reboot his career as a solo artist. His appearance in Auckland comes on the heels of the local release of his second solo album, The Flood And The Mercy. Fans of his work with Live will recognize the chest-beating intensity of the words and music on this new collection…it sounds very similar to Live.

But what made this show interesting, was the fact that Ed K. was performing solo…or almost solo…he was accompanied by bass player Chris Heerlein. And so his arena-sized anthems like I Alone and Lightning Crashes had to be paired down to for the tiny Tuning Fork and the minimal instrumentation of guitar and bass.

With a sold-out crowd ready and waiting, Kowalczyk and his bass player took the stage at 10pm and started things off with All Over You, one of the most popular tracks from the multi-million selling 1994 album, Throwing Copper. At first Ed sounded a bit shaky, but he soon settled into the song and his strong, very recognizable voice gained resonance. It didn’t hurt that he was assisted by the 300 or so patrons who were singing along with him.

They continued to chime in during The Distance, from 1999’s The Distance To Here, before Ed brought things up to date with a tune from The Flood And The Mercy, at which time the crowd listened dutifully.

That’s the way most of the 90 minute set went. The fans sang along, almost church-like to favourites like I Alone, The Dolphin’s Cry and Selling The Drama and they listened closely to recent songs like All That I Wanted and Seven.

Kowalczyk had plenty of entertaining between-song patter. While introducing The Great Beyond, he noted that it had been featured in the film, Killing Bono, then joked with the crowd about that prospect.

Before playing Pain Lies On The Riverside, from 1991’s Mental Jewelry, he noted that when the song was released, “cellphones were way bigger than they are now”.

It was an interesting situation…here was an artist starting out on his solo career, while at the same time celebrating the 20th anniversary of his and his band’s most popular album. Throwing Copper got plenty of time…he performed six songs from it…but he also covered a lot of other ground.

Both he and his adoring fans left the venue beaming, their Valentine’s Day date over.

Marty Duda

Review from Sydney

QUOTE
Live Review: Ed Kowalczyk @ Enmore Theatre, Sydney – February 11, 2014

Review and Photos by Peter Coates

Ed KowalczykWalking up Enmore Road to the venue, thinking about the 20 or more years since the two massive Live albums had left their mark on adult, contemporary rock music, and noting the ticket prices, there was a thought that this might be a somewhat “intimate” show – shows how switched on I must be – the Enmore was packed at 8.30pm enjoying the solo guitar ballads of Anita Lester from Lester The Fierce.

A fairly minimalist stage and lighting set up, and a roar as the house lights dimmed and the intro kicked in… and the band strolled onto the stage and kicked in to the Throwing Copper album in track order… from “The Dam at Otter Creek” all the way through to “Horse/Untitled”. Ed Kowalczyk picked up a guitar for “Selling the Drama” and the huge “I Alone”, before leading the first of many crowd sing-alongs with “Lightning Crashes”.

The sound was more raw and gutsy than the more polished recorded versions, but performed by a really honest and tight three-piece band behind the front man – particular mention goes to Chris Heerlein on Bass and Backing Vocals, and Zak Loy on lead guitar, who looked young enough to have been born after the Live albums were first released. The power of the band was released on “All Over You”, and the huge slabs of power chords in the middle section – the band nailed it!

“Shit Towne” showed some good light and shade, driven along by Ramy Antoun on the kit, and featured another blistering solo from Zak, getting the crowd to bounce along to the chorus. “T.B.D.” maintained the laid-back feel until yet another wailing solo with some extended feedback into the punky “Stage” which saw Ed Kowalczyk at his most animated around the stage.

Another enthusiastic singalong for “Waitress”, and then a minor drop in intensity through “Pillar of Davidson” and the first half of “White, Discussion”, until the band blitzed through the rest of the song into an unashamedly over the top ending. Horse/Untitled”, the album closer, featured Zack on lap slide guitar.

And that was Throwing Copper – Anita Lester then joined Ed Kowalczyk for a duet of “All That I Wanted” from the new album, followed by a semi-acoustic version of “Run To Water” to close the set proper.

After a short break, another intro tape, and the band crashed into cracking version of “Lakini’s Juice”, the first single from Live’s follow-up album to Throwing Copper, Secret Samahdi – with an almost industrial rock feel to it. Another new song, the new single “Seven” from The Flood And The Mercy, and then one for the ladies, “Heaven” from the Birds of Pray album. Ed K does not have the strongest voice in music, but has a distinctive quality that has been retained since the early 1990’s when Live were in their heyday.

One of the crowd had been getting louder and louder with her “Take your shirt off Ed” screams from the back…….and after his solo single “Grace”, the expected finale of “The Dolphin’s Cry” was prefaced with a more masculine shout of “Take your shirt off for my wife Ed!” The finale lacked a bit of power with only the one guitar, but the sold-out crowd couldn’t have cared less and the ovation at the end was enormous.
