I get the feeling he thinks he is a better singer than what he really is. He just doesn't do this kind of stuff very well at all - not at all.

Yeah, he does think he's a better singer than he actually is, I reckon. In fairness, I've no idea how this song is supposed to be song, but it does sound like he's really trying to sing above himself with it. I think it would have been much better and less embarrassing if he'd underplayed the delivery a bit more. As it is he's trying to give this grand, masterful vocal performance and it's just not quite as good as he wants it to be.
