I know we have a couple of resident Alice In Chains fans here. What do you think of the new vocalist? (if you've not seen him in action yet, have search on www.youtube.com and you'll find some - the Rock Am Ring is the best quality footage)

I had a "fucking hell - that's Lenny Kravitz!" moment, but I've sort of got over my skepticism after seeing a bit of footage. Well, you can't say he's trying to be Layne in any way - even not taking account of his ethnicity. But he does have a certain power in his vocal delivery that does the songs justice.

It's still all a bit weird for me, though, on several levels.

No chance for me to see them in the near future I guess (I blew my chance of seeing them at Novarock). But from the bootlegs I've heard, DuVall seems to deliver aptly. And yeah, he seems not 'trying' to be a Layne, and that's good.

Have you guys downloaded their Hollywood show off dime? I couldn't find the recent Seattle show though.

My other side wants to say though that somehow, it won't be anything as near as what Alice in Chains were without the intensity of Layne. Man he sang from his soul, every word, every grunt. And I've never heard anyone sing Would? with such authority and power as Layne circa 1992.

Layne is one of the best vocalists, ever, in my opinion. When you see AIC Unplugged and it's painfully obvious he's a dead man walking, his voice still rings out with such soul, beauty and clarity. Very few people can sing and move me like Layne could.

Like I say, DuVall does sound great and occasionally, momentarily, if I shut my eyes... But no, this is more cabaret act than how AIC used to be - there isn't even any new material to perform. It's 'nice' to see the old guys together having a good time, but that's it. I know Jerry wrote and sang on a lot of AIC's stuff, but it's a bit like somebody doing a good cover of a Jeff Buckley song - something will always be missing.

Yup, same thoughts here. Just glad to see Mike, Sean, and Jerry do their thing once more. And I guess they have the right to.

I don't know, but many of their songs somehow sounds like they were only meant to be sang by Layne. He sang it from experience and it was like it was his soul singing. That explains why not many can give justice to the songs. The emotional level just can't be reached.

So what's your favorite Unplugged song? Mine's Nutshell.
