Looks like they auctioned off a percentage of future royalties on their current catalog for the next 30 years.

I believe the buyer would get a percentage of every dollar made from their songs.

So Universal needs money or something like that?

What is the difference between the 3?

Interesting find, thanks!

At least let me listen to the unreleased material

Perhaps a dumb question, but would have the band members themselves get any money from auction?

Yes, this is the question I'd like to know the answer to. I signed up for an account and had a look in more detail at the auctions (there's a bid history viewable as well) but there was no information as to which individual tracks were included in each of the auctions.

This is pretty interesting. I think all three auctions are for the same catalog of songs and probably includes all their albums with Radioactive. Notice the first two auctions list the same previous 12 months royalty payments while the third says it’s for a larger share of the same portfolio and lists exactly double the royalties. Just a guess though.

I have a few questions about these auctions:
  1. Who sold rights?
  2. What tracks are included in the sale?
  3. What percentage of royalties are included in the sale?
  4. Why would somebody want to sell the rights?

Check the US copyright office and search Live to see who the registered copyright holder is. They have the ability to sell rights, I assume.

If you sign in and check the tracklist, that will tell you all the tracks.

Not sure if it mentions these details when you register, but maybe contacting the site or the highest bidder might provide insight.

One might finance these royalties to get a bunch of quick cash.

I have an Excel spreadsheet containing the raw data regarding streams and sales. Will post later.
