Weezer Follow ‘Africa’ With Surprise Covers LP, ‘The Teal Album’
Ten-track record includes takes on Michael Jackson, Black Sabbath, Tears for Fears, the Eurythmics, TLC

Eight months after scoring a surprise hit with their fan-demanded rendition of Toto’s “Africa,” Weezer surprise-released a full covers LP, Weezer (The Teal Album). The record is out now via Crush Music/Atlantic Records and available via iTunes, Spotify and other digital retailers.

The Teal Album – which arrives weeks before Weezer (The Black Album), the alt-rock band’s 13th set of original material – features songs they performed on their summer 2018 tour, including a-ha’s “Take on Me” and the Turtles’ “Happy Together.” The LP spans Eighties pop (Tears for Fears’ “Everybody Wants to Rule the World,” the Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This,” Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean”), vintage metal (Black Sabbath’s “Paranoid”), art-rock (Electric Light Orchestra’s “Mr. Blue Sky”), classic soul (Ben E. King’s “Stand By Me”), Nineties R&B (TLC’s “No Scrubs”) and, naturally, “Africa.”

The Dave Sitek-produced Black Album, out March 1st, includes the previously issued cuts “Can’t Knock the Hustle” and “Zombie Bastards.” Weezer will promote the LP with a spring U.S. tour with the Pixies that launches March 8th in Louisville, Kentucky; the joint trek wraps April 12th in Las Vegas, Nevada, followed by a slot at Coachella and a run of international dates.

Unfortunately, I agree. They just don't care enough. Too scared/lazy to even mix up the setlist.

I think ideally they would have wanted to be an epic household name, but the music industry changed along with popular music, and Ed's voice and inspiration decreased in the early to mid 2000's polarizing the fanbase. These guys at one point thought outside the box. Public affection and early live utilized grassroots marketing, fanclubs and the early internet. They have done a lot of covers, but they were never one for cover albums.

I don’t understand it either. I compare them to every other band I listen to, and some of those bands are old geezers mind you, and everyone out shines Live’s work ethic. They frustrate the absolute crap outta me.
Here January is almost over and still no U.S. headlining or coheadlining tour dates announced for this year.

“Very soon” in Līve terms is like 90 years.

Whether you are interested in the cover album or not is sort of missing the point. It’s the fact that it’s sorta innovative and the fact they cranked it out in 8 MONTHS and they have tour plans set in stone all while Līve has...?

It seems like every diehard LIVE fan around the globe has come to terms with the fact that, you know, they suck, except for Nick.

IMO.

I think they want to and maybe have tried to do fun stuff in the past and maybe even currently. I think they then hit the corporate roadblocks that labels can and do throw out there to control their IP's. and then they get frustrated and stop trying to do stuff like that.

Tell me you can't picture a temper tantrum and just walking away.

Lets be honest, Live doesn't have the clout of Weezer. Live doesn't have the fan base Weezer has, I recall when Weezer opened for Live and they were not well received. Now the tables are flipped.

I don't think it's a work ethic issue. Unlike those other bands, Live isn't a full time gig anymore. They're doing other stuff.

Throwing in one cover on an EP is fine. Cover albums are rarely any good.

Weezer has a spring tour, Live will be touring this summer. Announcing 4-5 months before the first date is plenty of time.

How does the general public know they are going to tour the US in the summer? Unless it was mentioned in an interview and I missed it or forgot it. I thought they were touring overseas this summer, so I was expecting spring or fall dates. Are they mostly doing festivals overseas and that’s it? It would be nice to know.

Bands juggle all kinds of side projects, including other bands, producing, photography, book writing, etc etc.

You all can keep making excuses for them if you want, but no denying the work since the reunion has been a let down. Even so, I am thankful for what we do get... loved the show last summer and 3/5 songs on the EP.
