Last night a member of another band I follow tweeted this same question. A lot of cool discussion followed.

Top 7 LĪVE songs:

1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.

Top 3 Deep Tracks:
1.
2.
3.

Everyone’s going to be different with how they approach it, which makes for some cool conversation. I went fast, off the top of my head, with how I’m feeling today, and stayed away from rarities. I define deep track as one that is buried, that a casual fan would not recognize. Here’s mine:

1. I Alone
2. Lakini’s Juice
3. Dolphin’s Cry
4. Lightning Crashes
5. All Over You
6. White, Discussion
7. Pain Lies On the Riverside

1. You Are the World
2. Like I Do
3. Heropsychodreamer

What is interesting for me is that I’ve been tired of Lightning Crashes for about 20 years, but know I need to include it on the top 7. Also, I’m sure later I’ll want to replace Like I Do, but it’s what I’m craving today.

I’m anxious to see your lists. bounce.gif

In no order:

1: Run To The Water
2: Shit Towne
3. Selling The Drama
4: All Over You
5: They Stood Up For Love
6: Lightning Crashes
7: Turn My Head

And if we're doing deeper cuts as album tracks:

1: Pillar Of Davidson
2: Meltdown
3: Top

Pillar probably not too deep but had to find a way to fit STD in the top 7. I discovered the band through The Distance To Here, hence why it features highly.

Also in no order:

1: Lakini's Juice
2: Run To The Water
3. White, Discussion
4: Turn My Head
5: Pain Lies On The Riverside
6: They Stood Up For Love
7: Overcome

Deep cuts:

1: Meltdown
2: Graze
3: Hands Of A Teacher

It was easier to pick 3 deep cuts than 7 singles. Weird.

What’s weird for me is “top Līve tracks” are a little different than my top 7 favorite Līve songs. When it comes to top tracks, I picked what they would best be known for and what casuals would expect to hear in concert. My top 7 favorites (album tracks only) would be:

1 You are the World
2 Stage
3 Operation Spirit
4 Dolphins Cry
5 Lakini’s Juice
6 I Alone
7 Voodoo Lady

*These are ranked, were a little difficult to narrow down, & may change slightly over time.

What a fun exercise!

Top 7 LĪVE songs:

1. Operation Spirit (It's the song that got me into Live and turned me into a drummer, plus, at one time, it helped me get through a trying time with religion.)
2. Lakini's Juice (Hands down their best rock song.)
3. White, Discussion (I was absolutely blown away when I first heard this song, and it's their best closer by far. If they don't close with it, I'm sad.)
4. I Alone (When I had emergency surgery almost 10 years ago, I had "fear is not the end of this" on loop as I was wheeled into surgery.)
5. They Stood Up For Love (Just a great rock song.)
6. 6310 Rodgerton Dr (Yeah, I went there with a Shinn song.)
7. The Way Around is Through (Another from The Turn. I really like the album, and I just love everything about this song.)

Top 3 Deep Tracks:
1. Like I Do (The opening chords still send chills down my spine, and it's their second best rocker behind LJ. What I wouldn't give to have both songs on a setlist again.)
2. Gas Hed Goes West (I don't know what it is about this song, but I remember the exact place and moment when I heard it teased on the radio before SS came out and it's always been one of my favorites.)
3. Still Aroused (The live version more than the recorded version.)

I have *way* more deep tracks that I like than "the hits", and almost kept going just to list them out, but that'll be a topic for another day.

I don't really understand the premise of the game here or how people came to rank their choices so I'm just listing my favourite 7 Live songs and then 3 other favourite Live songs. …

1. Lightning Crashes Come on, it is THE Live song
2. Like I Do Killer, sexy, cool as fuck. It sounded new in '03 and still sounds new today.
3. Hold Me Up There is a very good reason everybody wants this released into the wide world, and it ain't because we want a higer quality version for ourselves.
4. Mirror Song Simple. Introspective. Passionate. Inspired. All the things Live should be.
5. Meltdown Not sure why but the song gives me chills. Is it the mysterious lyric, the slide guitar, the classic Ed batshit performace? Always loved the line that was cut from this gem: "The dark destiny of man unfolds...and the battle waged in every soul"
6. The Dolphin's Cry Maybe because it's tied to the promotional material at the time and being a 16 year old, but seeing your favourite band get slammed by a tidal wave and getting up to rock their asses off will never leave my mind.
7. Dance With You Magic.

The other ones:

1. Flow An anthem of guidance for the troubled youth, once yours truly.
2. Everytime I See Your Face Just a happy, joyfull pop-rock masterpeice. Say what you will, this one will always make me smile and sing!
3. We Deal In Dreams If any one song encompasses everything that Live represents this is it. Wandering through everything they have ever discussed thematically and emotionally with patience and intensity, meditation and potential, this song can and will move you.

1. Waterfall Typo

So many regrets since posting this 5 minutes ago. But I shall single out Siren's Call. Epic Live song. I'm tied to the MASSSTT!! Reminded me of what Live could be and will be!

I just assumed Voodoo Lady was requesting the 7 favorite released singles and three favorite deep cuts from an album.

My 10 overall songs would include the 3 deep cuts I chose, but not so many of the singles.

Secret Samadhi and The Distance to Here are both awesome and it was hard not to include anything from them on my list, but nothing on those albums connected with me as powerfully as their first two albums. I've often wondered why that is since there are fans I share a lot in common with that are more passionate about SS and TDTH and was thinking it might have something to do with where I was in life when I first heard MJ and TC.

I don't know how true this is, but a conversation from a random old episode of Criminal Minds caught my ear a few weeks ago (bear with me, it's relevant I swear):

QUOTE
Dr. Spencer Reid: You know, 14 is when we start to make our own musical choices. Our cognitive development evolves at that age and we start to form our own cultural identity.

Derek Morgan: We stop listening to the music that our parents put on and we start listening to the music that our friends listen to.

Dr. Spencer Reid: And those musical experiences imprint on us. Our hormonal surges as teenagers may make the choices seem more personal and passionate. And later on in life we might experiment with other musical selections, but no music ever impacts us as much as that which we listen to at age 14.

I was 14 years old when I first heard Mental Jewelry and it hooked me immediately...then when Throwing Copper came out and "MY BAND" that I loved exploded on the scene I rode that wave of awesomeness and excitement into making Live a part of my cultural identity. So I think I definitely bonded with MJ and TC in a way that probably wasn't possible with their later albums, for me.

That’s really cool; a very interesting take on things. While I’d say I really developed a love for music at 8 years old, I did listen to what those around me listened to. 13/14 years old is when, out of the genres I had been exposed to, I chose what I liked the best and started buying my own albums. Also, 14 was the age I attended my first concert and oh my God, at that moment it was all over. Call me deceased and bury me in hard rock and heavy metal.

Gosh, if we're just picking our ten favorites overall:

Meltdown (extra verse)
Graze
Hands Of A Teacher
Deeper
Don't Wait
Insomnia
Stage
Tired Of Me
Rivertown
Spew

This is actually my perfect Live album, I think I'll make a playlist, lol.
