I just watched Live's amazing performance on American Idol for the umpteenth time, and I got to thinking about just how big this could be for the band. Consider this:

36 million people watched the show

Let's say of those 36 million, 30 million saw Live's performance (there's always going to be watchers who only see a portion of a 2-hour show)

Let's say of those 30 million, 33% liked Live's performance. This is an extremely low estimate based on the overall comments I have seen, but I'm just using it to prove a point. Even with only a third of the viewers enjoying the performance, that's still an amazing 10 million people who saw, and liked, the band.

Let's say that of those 10 million people who liked Live's performance (again, this is a pretty low estimate based on the strong comments I have seen/heard about the duet), 10% of those people decide to but SFBM at some point because of what they saw (again, I'm choosing a pretty low estimate - 10% - because I really have no idea of how to accurately project what percentage of viewers who like an appearance they see on tv actually go out and buy something from the artist).

Even with numbers projected at a very low estimate...that's still 1 million people who would buy SFBM because of Live's appearance. That's enough to make the album go Gold AND Platinum, and amounts to far more album sales than any of the band's previous two albums.

It would have helped more if the album was out.

It certainly won't hurt sales. They will probably play bigger venues on the next leg of the tour. They are not our secret band any longer.

Your estimates are way off, in my opinion. Most AI watchers don't care at all about rock bands and are probably old women sitting in rocking chairs in Alabama. Which is exactly why Taylor Hicks won. I doubt it will help very much, but it probably will offer the biggest bang for the buck as far as performances go.

I don't know what impact Live's AI appearance will have on their future sales, etc. Hopefully it will pay off big time for them.

I know you're probably joking around about the "old women sitting in rocking chairs"......

Just wanted to pass along that AI has long been known to be a reality show which does appeal to all ages. It's base following, however, has always been in the 18- to 49-year-olds. I found articles to back that up on the websites of USA Today, CNN, pollingpoint.com, and HollywoodHotline.com. Also, this article was released by Associated Press based upon Neilsen Ratings and I copied it from entertainment website zap2it.com:

"We do know this: A whole lot of people watched. The finale delivered an exclamation point to the singing competition's highest-rated season ever and helped FOX cement its position as the No. 1 network this season in the advertising world's holy-grail demographic of adults 18-49.

The "Idol" finale, in which gray-haired Soul Patrolman Taylor Hicks topped the bubbly Katharine McPhee to win this year's crown, drew 36.4 million viewers across its two hours. That, FOX says, makes Wednesday the most-watched night of entertainment programming in network history."

Personally, I think it was a very smart move to perform on American Idol and I enjoyed their performance.

one thing is for sure, a LOT of people watched the show. as a result, a LOT of chris's fans WILL check out live. even more important, out of the millions that watched the show, i am sure there were LOTS of folks who had liked/followed live in the past that will check them out again. record sales have surged for other artists who have appeared on AI, so logically live will follow suit. and this was the most widely viewed AI ever!

I'd say any positive exposure like this is good. It will get people talking about Live... and all the women who voted for Chris because they had the hots for him would have gone WOW! at Ed. lol.gif

Even if only 1% of the audience were interested enough to go and investigate Live's music a little further, that's going to translate into sales. And if the audience was 200 million, that's potentially 2 million people worldwide.

They did sound GREAT and more importantly in this day and age, Ed looked GREAT. Did anybody see Chad T do that little kick... hilarious! The guys looked like they were having a great time.
