Two songs with similar themes but different approaches.

I like them both, but one definitely more than the other.

Compare:

"Home":

I'm a soldier on the field
Fightin' for you
Fightin' for me
You can see it on our faces
Like the bullets leave tracers
You can feel it for real

You can't imagine the pain of my babies so far away
So far from my home

When they comin' home?
When they leavin' that place?
See their lover's face again
Kid will see his daddy's face again
When they comin' home?

Lord, shed some grace
See their lover's face again
Kid will see his daddy's face again

I'm a soldier on the field
Waitin' to die, prayin' to live
To survive one more day
But my hope begins to fray
It's my flesh against the steel

You'll never know what I've known
You'll never see what I've seen
I hope we make it home

When they comin' home?
When they leavin' that place?
See their lover's face again
Kid will see his daddy's face again
When they comin' home?

Lord, shed some grace
Put your peace in the valley tonight
Bring the soldier home alright
When they comin' home?

When they leavin' that place?
See their lover's face again
Kid will see his daddy's face again

"So far from home", she cries
"Politics aside, what I'd give to have him here tonight"

When they comin' home?
When they leavin' that place?
See their lover's face again
Kid will see his daddy's face again
When they comin' home?

Lord, shed some grace
Put your peace in the valley tonight
Bring the soldier home alright
When they comin' home?

Children playin' in the sun, home
See their lover's face again
Kid will see his daddy's face again
When they comin' home?

Mama braidin' your sweet hair, home
Put your peace in the valley tonight
Bring the soldier home alright
When they coming' home?

Children playin' in the sun, home
See their lover's face again
Kid will see his daddy's face again
When they comin' home?

Mama braidin' your sweet hair, home
When they coming' home?

"Army Reserve":
Army Reserve

How long must she stand
Before the ground, it gives way
To an endless fall
She can feel this
War on her face
The stars on her pillow
She's folding in darkness
Begging for slumber

I'm not blind
I can see it coming
Looks like lightning
In my child's eye

I'm not frantic
I can feel it coming
Violently shakes
My body

Her son's slanted
Always giving her
The sideways eye
The empty chair where dad sits
How loud can silence get?
And mom, she reassures
To contain him
But it's becoming a lie

She tells herself
And everyone else
Father is risking
His life for our freedoms

I'm not blind
I can see it coming
Looks like lightning
In my child's eye

I'm not frantic
I can feel it coming
Darling you'll save me
If you save yourself

Pearl Jam's version is very dark and depressing. Something that isn't comforting at all to families with loved ones overseas. At least LIVE's version gives hope that they will be coming home. War is depressing enough without Pearl Jam adding their two cents....

No contest for me.

Whether you are comfortable or not, the reality is....war is not happy, not trite, not by any means a way to solve differences. It is dark, depressing, humanity at its worst. Based on lyrics alone, I am so for Pearl Jam's Army Reserve. PJ's is reality.

I think the idea was, not every family wants to feel suicidal every day their loved one is away in Iraq or Afghanistan.

I've never liked Pearl Jam ~ I can hear that song in my head now complete with plodding, unimaginative guitars and overwrought vocals.

Before I duck behind something solid, can I just apoligise in advance to the Pearl Jam nuts who are going to flay my hide for that comment. This one's for you, bud's.

IMHO!!!!!

Everyone's entitled to his/her own opinion, of course, but you should have gone and listened to the clip before pre-judging.

The musical structure of the song is amazing, especially the layering of vocals with Eddie's voice over an enchanting chorus.

Dude I think you mean he just recorded it back in the sheep pen smile.gif

haha just joking, I actually don't mind Pearl Jam, some of their older stuff I really like with bits and pieces of everything else too .. but he is kinda sheepish at times.
