OK, Ed is a dick. He's a cocksucker. He's embarrassing himself. I hate him. But Zion is a great song, and Ed is still Ed. I will tone down my bashing of him. I'm drunk. Fuck you. Ed still has flashes of greatness. I wish I were my age now in 1995. Oh well.

It's one of his very, very few shining moments over the past 7-8 years or so. I do dig Zion.

Zion is surprisingly the song which was a light that made us think he was getting back to his early days, remember guys? I used to spin that mp3 rip of its first performance dozens of times daily.

Still like it although have not listened to it for about a year I think.

I dig it's chain gang kind of humming feel. It has some actual soul to it.

Aye, it's a decent tune. The best off Alive without question.

I too really like the song, but some of the lyrics just seem so evangelical crazy to me. The song is super easy to play if you play guitar and I play it for my son because of the humming and the soulful aspect, he likes it and dances to it. When I sing along though, I'm actually embarrassed at times because of the lyrics.

"Satan won't dare to stand to long......"

Just seems so damn 'vacation bible school'

Better than the "La da da da, da da da da da" from The River? guitar.gif

When I first heard Zion before the album came out, I thought Alive was going to be VERY different than how it ended up...

Wouldn't that have been a kick if that song HAD set the tone for Ed's album?

i think it shows that ed is capable of greatness. but he has this weird fetish for sickly goody goody pop. i think it could be a side effect of some kind of drug. or maybe a blow to the head. i still like ed, hes got a fucking good voice. i wish i could take a drug that would make me forget the entire history of this band. so i can move on with my life. BUT I CANT

Even if he had come out and sang/wrote songs like he did back in the day on Alive, it still wouldn't have excused all the underhanded bullshit. It would've just made it that much sadder. So take solace in the fact that current Ed, for the most part, sucks balls and that Ed's current fans didn't get the best of him. cool.gif

and I bet if Alive was full of Zions and the like, we would feel a bit easier towards Ed. Or if he was only touring acoustically

When I first heard Zion acoustically, I was floored.

I heard the passion and uniqueness once again that made him great in the past. He completely stayed away from pussifying the song and just let it all hang out.

Since then, we've gotten the studio version, which personifies everything that is wrong with produced music today. I can't even begin to explain how the studio version of this song makes me sick to my stomach, so I won't bother. I haven't listened to it in god knows how long, nor will I ever again by choice.

Also, I've heard a couple of acoustic versions of it that he has performed since, and they're just not the same. He changes tones and pitches at the end of lines that make him sound like a complete fucking tool, and I feel embarassed for him.

Sing the song like it was meant to be sung, powerful and emotional, and stop pussying it down FFS. It's the epitomy of what has gone wrong with this fucking guy. He takes something so utterly raw, beautiful and powerful and turns it into something that I don't want to listen to him finish performing.

That very RAWNESS was what made Ed great. It exuded that aura of spirituality and realness about him. Pussifying the shit down makes him seem fake and to me, like a comple and utter sellout joke.
