I have a feeling many of these will be similar, but thought it would be interesting to see where everyone ranked Live's studio albums ...

1. Throwing Copper
2. Secret Samadhi
3. V
4. Mental Jewelry
5. The Distance to Here
6. Songs from Black Mountain
7. Birds of Pray

I said it in another post, but Simple Creed is still one of my top five songs. And Overcome was so powerful here in the US, I had to put V up there. As for SFBM not being last, for some reason I like Wings and Get Ready a lot. Sophia live is still awesome (or was awesome anyways).

1. Throwing Copper
2. TDTH
3. Secret Samadhi
4. Mental Jewelry
5. V
6. BOP
7. Songs from Black Mountain

The top three rotate on a regular basis. At the moment I'm actually listening to TDTH more.

Studio Albums only - alright:

1. Throwing Copper
2. TDTH
3. SS
4. MJ
5. BOP
6. SFBM
7. V

* Radiant Sea would be in my top 5 if it met the criteria. Fantastic collection of songs!

* (#'s 2 and 3 are interchangable. They are ranked based on current vibe at the moment)

*(Alive would have made my top 5 "studio albums". Not that it blew me out of the water - that's how bad late Live was).

Incoming blasphemy:

1.) The Distance to Here
2.) Mental Jewelry
3.) Throwing Copper
4.) Secret Samadhi
5.) Birds of Pray
6.) V
7.) Songs from Black Mountain

If I could, I'd put a huge gap in between 4 and 5. After those four you go from great albums to albums with some great songs. It doesn't sound like much, but it's a huge difference. I can play TDTH, MJ, TC, and SS straight through, no skips and love everything I hear. BOP, V, and SFBM are all cherry picked songs. I never play those albums straight through anymore, and other then BOP, never did after the first week or so they dropped. Sure, Like I Do, Sofia, and Simple Creed are all individually great songs but as a whole the last three albums are significantly weaker, so while I may rank Lighthouse over Horse song to song, BOP can't hold a candle to TC overall.

Now I know my top four is blasphemous as neither TC nor SS are number one, and even more insulting, neither are they number two. I ranked my albums on the whole package, sound, lyrics, feel (just for a completely ambiguous term) as well as my personal attachment to each one. TDTH was, for me, the whole package. It was musically fantastic and Ed (in my opinion) was at his lyrical best.

I'm only rating 4.

1.SS
2.TC
3.TDTH
4.MJ

The others I rarely listen to beginning to end so I can't really rank them amongst favorites.

Throwing Copper is the pinnacle for me. TDTH may have been a more prolific writing period for the band, but the raw, punch-you-in-the-gut sound and the writing all combined to make this one hurricane of an album. Plus, this is the album that got me into the band in the first place. Everything else gets compared to it by default in my mind.

Btw, while I think The Distance To Here is a fine album, and has some incredible songs on it, I also think that Mental Jewelry gets left out in the cold too often in rankings like these and I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that the production on the album may not have been good as the other major releases. Plus, the songwriting was still maturing at that point. But from the standpoint of where the band was, the strength of the songs on the album, the relatively decent production quality, and where the band wound up on its very next album I decided to put MJ ahead of TDTH

1) Throwing Copper
2) Secret Samadhi
3) Mental Jewelry
4) The Distance To Here
5) Birds Of Pray

6) V

7) That other album that I refuse to name here...
