I've noticed in the ED vs TGF threads that some of us seem to have wildly different tastes in music, which is actually really cool.

I'm curious how everyone here would answer the following questions:

1) Between the examples we've heard of Ed's new music and the examples we've heard of TGF, which type of music is more your style?

2) What OTHER bands do you love/like?

3) WHY and WHEN did you gravitate to Live's music?

I think it would be really interesting to see the trends these answers would probably show.

Unfortunately, I figure it would take about 4 posts before someone was mocking someone else's reply or bitching about Ed or claiming TGF is evil or whatever. nervous.gif

But if that kind of crap didn't happen, and we all answered, don't you think there would be some noticeable trends? I sure do.

Great questions!!
1. I tend to lean more TGF personally.
2. I have a wide range of musical tastes from Nina Simone, Ray LaMontagne, Dire Straits, The WHO, Marley, SRV, Buddy Guy, Classic Blondie, The Kinks, Phoenix, John Mayer, Eastmountainsouth, Passion Pit, Ghostland Observatory, The Go-Gos, Sex Pistols, Bryan Ferry/Roxy Music, Cocteau Twins, Led Zeppelin, Dixie Chicks, JEM, Sting/THE POLICE, Daft Punk, Mazzy Star and Bowie.
3. I started listening to LIVE in the early 90s around MJ. There was something that just clicked with me and that has always stayed with me.

1. TGF
2. I can range from pop and soft rock stuff to Extreme Brutal Technical Death Progressive Obsessive Mumbo Jumbo Noodle Oottle Metal.
But relly, with music my tastes always vary but my leanings are primarly in the progressive -rock-metal areas. (some favourite bands: Riverside, Porcupine Tree, Dream Theater, Tool, Opeth (my avatar, check em out smile.gif and so on.
2. 1994, Why? have you listened to Throwing Copper? wink.gif

1. TGF completely. And this I can say putting aside all other personal aspects. I prefer the harder edge, I like the rawer sound, I dig the riffs. Zion is a good song, but better acoustic. I like pop music, I like pop music that is just fun without having to have much meaning to it, but Ed's just doesn't hit home.

2. A huge range .. Morrissey/The Smiths obviously, a band that basically helped create the indie genre. Ween is my other big favorite, a band that can do literally any style of music from reggae to country to blues to pop to metal to chinese folk song. Other than that .. Faith No More, Nick Cave, Sparks, Mr Bungle, Madness, Motorhead, Powderfinger, The Living End, Grant Lee Buffalo, Royal Crown Revue, Roots Manuva, Kate Miller-Heidke, The Go! Team, Pixies, Modest Mouse, Tom Waits, Franz Ferdinand, Kaiser Chiefs, Groove Armada, nouvelle vague, Dub Trio, The Guess Who, Led Zeppelin... lots of music in languages other than English too like Rammstein, Salif Keita, -M-, Lo Jo, Baba Maal etc..
Just to name a few .. so it's all over the place really..

3. Live is one of the few bands I was brought up on right from scratch by my Dad and have just sort of had them in my life since about 1991 really. I was 6 then when Dad must have heard something from MJ on the radio and bought the album. Dad plays music non stop and was in a band, his parents were in the orchestra .. so always really musical in our family .. so my exposure to music was intense when I was young and some bands he played I just took a real liking to and would put their music on even when he wasn't around ... Mental Jewlery was one of them, and by the time Throwing Copper came out I was already a fan and looking forward to the album. It's hard to say what attracted me to them cos I was so young.

I like a wide range of music; mostly rock, alternative and pop, though.

One band I absolutely love is Intwine. They are the best Dutch rock band by miles and miles - IMHO.

Definitely a band you have to check out

1. I like all styles of good music - except for country - it would not be unusual to find Rage against the machine playing on my ipod, followed by a neil diamond song (no apologies- i love neil- every cheesy moment..) - but by and large my fav musical genre is 90s alternative rock.. from what i've heard TGF fits more w/my style than what we've heard from ed so far..

2. incubus, alice in chains, soundgarden, rage, audioslave, killers, green day

3. i discovered live during throwing copper-thought it was a great album, like PJ's ten, but SS elevated the band for me personally into my fav.. the intensity of it, the intriguing weirdness of the lyrics (Insomnia & another hole in universe still one of my favs) and a balls-out rocking sound..

1. Think 'Grace' is alright - but it's not my kinda thing. Definitely the sound of TGF for me over Ed's stuff.

2. Other bands: Nirvana, Metallica, Pearl Jam, Seether (Saron Gas), REM, Counting Crows, RHCP, Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Ramones, The Parlotones, Foo Fighters, The White Stripes, Led Zeppelin, Queen - lots more, but I'm sure these cover my taste sufficiently.

3. From the time I first heard 'I Alone' and a few weeks later 'Selling the Drama' on local radio 5FM, in 1995 I knew it was a band I wanted to hear more of. The DJ at the time on the 'NIGHT ZOO' was Barney Simon, who later presented LIVE on stage on their 1st tour of SA in 2000, was a big fan. I listened to the Night Zoo every night, and he played I Alone almost every day. One day he played a 'Tripple Play' on NZ: 'I Alone', 'Pain Lies on the Riverside' and 'Lightning Crashes' and I was blown away, having not heard the latter 2 previously. I went out and bought Throwing Copper. MJ was not available in SA up until that point from what I was made to understand, and I had no idea the chronological order of the albums or that LIVE had a debut album or anything. In fact, I only got my copy of MJ in early 1998 after I had bought SS! Haven't missed a release since - was there at the store when they unpacked TDTH, BOP and SFBM - always pestering the store staff on when they were expecting the shipments and release. Crazy, but good times.

Edit: What's kept me a fan of LIVE down the years was that I really identified with the sound and the lyric - it really stood out for me as something I could understand and it transcended into everyday life somehow, almost perfectly. I could relate to it. It's rock music the way I liked it. You turn up White, Discussion or TBD off TC and you can't help but feel that energy flowing through. Even Pillar of Davidson, has that epic-ness about it - from the album art through each track - it really is this free standing, free flowing story - and it's perfect. Secret Samadhi was just a continuation of that journey for me, in a more fun way. and so on and so on...

To keep it short...

1. TGF
2. Some of my faves include Muse, Alter Bridge, Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, and Dropkick Murphy's.
3. I grew up and live in York, Pa, so I knew about LIVE pretty early on. Just gravitated towards their music since they were from the same town, then I got hooked. Caught on before TC was released. I was pretty young, but had some older aunts who were into them.

1. TGG, but can't kill off the idea of giving EK the occasional listen.
2. REM, U2, Foo Fighters, Collective Soul, Fleetwood Mac, Depeche Mode, The Cure, Better Than Ezra, Alice in Chains, etc.. These are my main artist of choice, beyond LIVE.
3. I grew up in Kentucky in the Tri-State Region (Along the Kentucky, West Virginia, Ohio border's). Thankfully I had an older friend who turned me on to LIVE at an early age (6th Grade). My first listen was Good Pain off a bootleg of DOAD. I soon went out and bought MJ and followed the boys for the better part of their 20+ year existence. I was thankful enough to see them in PA, during MJ Tour, and followed them nearly to their last concert. The number of miles I have logged following the boys is ridiculous, but the memories I created and the people I met are awesome.

1) I'll probably pick what I like from both and listen to that.

2) I'm obsessed with 60s rock, so the Beatles/Stones/Doors/Jefferson Airplane/Jimi Hendrix/Cream/Big Brother/The Who. Even Bob Dylan, when I discovered that he had written so many cool songs. My obsession began with a bequest from my youngest aunt, who gave me huge piles of vinyl. She was leaving for Europe and wanted to leave her favourite bands to someone who would appreciate it. Besides the harder stuff, there's a shitload of 60s hits nobody remembers: on 45s!
I also have a weak spot for Kiss and the 80s glam rockers. Yeah, I know - but I'm not apologetic.
I like early AC/DC better than later. The Bon Scott stuff. Van Halen.
In the 90s, I was partial to Nirvana, Metallica and a lot of bands I don't care for any more. I remember listening to U2 , a bit of Collective Soul and Better than Ezra (because a couple of their songs were very Live-like).
This is HARD man. There are undoubtedly dozens of bands/performers I've liked and still like but my brain is blanker than the space behind Paris Hilton's eyes.

3) Although I saw a couple of videos from MJ and liked them I didn't really get into Live until TC. This is mostly because I was almost never able to listen to the radio or watch MuchMusic (Canadian MTV). Why I couldn't is a long story, but the upshot was that the only times I was able to check out MuchMusic it always seemed to be only rap/hiphop/house - so I turned it right off. The radio stations I had the chance to listen to weren't exactly playing a lot of new music, but in 94 I heard I Alone and was hooked. I had no idea it was the guys whose videos of Operation Spirit, etc I had heard and liked.

Good thread yanno. Will not answer in details, too lazy. Will maybe do it tomorrow.. Who knows.

1. TGF. Ed used to be the most influential person in my life. Seriously.

2. Totally different things. Oasis, Adam And The Weight, Adam Kowalczyk, Creed, Paul Weller, Stone Roses, Verve, James Dean Bradfield, Kasabian, Keane, Ocean Colour Scene, The Shining, Audioslave, Soundgarden, Chris Cornell, a balladeer, Pearl Jam, Shinedown, Seether, Incubus, Foo Fighters, Depeche Mode, Mesh, Recoil, 311, Gem, Shootyz Groove, Red Hot Chili Peppers, John Frusciante, Сегодняночью, Animal Джaz, Кирпичи - Copied the list from my page at russian facebook. It is far from complete as lately I am digging Pendullum, for instance

3. 1999. Saw TDC on MTV. In a week found a tape and spun it 8 times non stop during 1 night

1) TGF. Even though I'm interested in the EK stuff and I'll probably dig some songs, so far TGF has shown more promise, more edge and a more distinctive sound as Live always did for me. Both lyric as songwise.

2) Taste in music is diverse, alternative rock, (heavy) metal, hardcore, metalcore, indie, progressive.. if it's good music, it's good music to me. It can be from a catchy riff to a thought provoking lyric.

Some bands:
Muse, Iron Maiden, Papa Roach, Aereogramme, Foo Fighters, Bush, Incubus, Pearl Jam, Deftones, Slayer, Queens of the stone age, alter bridge, intwine, godsmack, bullet for my valentine, disturbed, mastodon, face tomorrow, korn, inme, oceansize, thursday, life of agony, beatsteaks, led zeppelin, blood red shoes, seether, e.town concrete, hatebreed.

3) 1999, I was rediscovering music and was totally amazed when I heard TDTH. hooked ever since. even more after seeing them in concert in 2001 for the first time.

1.) TGF is more my style. The sound and lyrics fit more into where my life is now then Ed's stuff.

2.) My other bands list is incredibly varied. Mostly alt or pop rock like Counting Crows, Collective Soul, Shinedown, Rise Against, Radiohead, amongst others. Hardest sound I usually listen to (i.e. bands whose CDs I would/will buy) is Disturbed and Breaking Ben. I also like a bit of country music, specifically Johnny Cash and the Eagles. I've also got a soft spot for classical music as well as a bit of flamenco guitar.

3.) It was either '93 or '94. I heard Pain Lies on the Riverside and was immediately interested in the band, but did not have the means to get their CD. That christmas I got three CDs, Nirvana's Nevermind, Green Day's Dookie and Offspring's Smash. I listened to all three that day, hated the Offspring CD (which is kinda odd because I really like the band now) and returned it in order to get Throwing Copper.

1. Having been a fan of Live and Candlebox since close to the beginning, and having not been a fan of Live's recent work at all, it is easy for me to say TGF. Ed has unfortunately lost a great deal of what made me a fan of his music.

2. My tastes range from rock, rap, old country, bluegrass, jazz, classical, to anything else. I'll try it all. Some of my favorite artists (besides Live and Candlebox) are Led Zeppelin, The Mars Volta, Outkast, The Bad Plus, Ben Folds, Amanda Palmer, Merle Haggard, Nine Inch Nails, Queensryche, and Matthew Good (to name a few).

3. I got into Live when I saw the video for Operation Spirit late at night on MTV. I went to the local record shop and special ordered the tape with my allowance money. I would've been 8? 9? I don't remember but I was a really into it, and probably Sonic the Hedgehog too.
