Weekends

I love lying in bed with you in the morning.
The space between your body and mine closing quickly
as I reach to gently touch your shoulder. Closing
quickly as I lean to kiss the back of your neck.
Closing quickly as I pull you toward me and hold you
like it’s the last time I ever will.

The men in the black suits came again yesterday.
I don’t know why. Well, I know why they came
(they always come for the same reason)
but I don’t know why they came
yesterday. They didn’t stay long.
Rummaged through a few things
in the desk. Glanced at some of the papers
on the table in front of the couch. And I think
they stole my copy of The Old Man and the Sea.

Some mornings I wake up and you’re not beside me.
It always scares me. Sometimes I think
the men in the black suits came while I was asleep
and took you. Sometimes I’m scared that you had been waiting
for them to come so that you could go with them.

But every time, as I’m about to get up and look for you,
I see you just down the hall holding our son
in your arms, looking at him like it’s the last time
you’ll ever see him, which I suppose is similar
to the way you’d look at him
were he never going to see me again.

I wonder, if you were to leave while I was sleeping,
would you go in your pajamas or would you be given
a black suit of your own?
