I found this connection made by Ed between Pain Lies On The Riverside and The River in an online article from the York Daily Record. I know a lot of you hate on The River, but it is one of my favorite +Live+ songs. Here is the connection he made for those interested.

True Live fans might wonder if the river talked about in the similarly titled song is the same as the one in Live's early hit, "Pain Lies by the Riverside." Kowalczyk said that they are one and the same, but that the songs have different messages.

"I think the river metaphor in 'Pain Lies by the Riverside' is the same," he said. "It's the pain where you're not going with the flow and stopped on the riverside.

"You're waiting somehow and the river is flowing, and it's representative of your life and process as a human being. ... I think the river in 'The River' is the same river. It's the flow of life and jumping in head first."

nice find. I love the fact that ed still hasn't changed his 'philosophy' if you can even call it a silly thing like that. I've been reading a lot of Jiddu Krishnamurti's work lately and im finding that i understand what live's songs are all about more so than before.

okay this is crazy. after posting that, i remembered a chapter of "Beyond Violence" by J Krishnamurti. This book is a series of lectures which took place in London in 1970. A questioner at the end of the lecture asks:

"Whatever I hear you say in this hall becomes so simple and easy to understand. But the moment I am outside I am at sea, and I do not know what to do when I am alone."

anyone see a connection here?

No question there is a huge connection. I've also ready a few of Krishnamuti's works. If you can find it, cause it's out of print, but pick up a copy of "You are the World". It was the first book Ed picked up about Krishnamuti and his philosophy. You will see some passages that were practically taken from the book and turned into the songs on Mental Jewelry. It's cool to ready then listen to Mental Jewelry at the same time.

J Krishnamurti Text Collection

Well, you're going to love this website. It has basically every bit of text published in the name of Jiddu Krishnamurti from the 1940's to the 1980's.

You are the world can be found here.

It's a collection of talks, much like his other books, but its very comprehensive and probably a good beginning point for any reader of Krishnamurti's works. Also i reccomend 'Freedom From The Known,' 'First and Last Freedom' and 'A Dialogue With Oneself.'

Enjoy! thumbsup.gif

P.S: after getting a good reading of most of Krishnamurti's work, it is extremely interesting to notice all of the influence that it has on Live's music. This is apparent all the way from DOAD to SFBM, however subtle it may be on SFBM, it is still there. Mental Jewelry is the greatest example, however.

Fantastic, thankyou. although i now feel kind of bumbed for spending fifty bucks on three of those texts last week.

anyway, i feel that SFBM and BOP are dare i say it, an evolution in a sense of ed's experience with Krishnamurti's work. Whereas the earlier albums were more direct references to the ideas and texts, the newer albums are the ideas put into practise, "heaven is one so why believe?" "Like a flower I can't see but i can feel" "you gotta find a way to flow" i feel that ed is living in the "flow of truth" and writing from that, rather than searching for it. hes said this himself.

but hey, this doesnt make the music better!

Can anyone make a suggestion on what book is a good place to start if I wanted to read about Krishnamurti or which of his books I should start with?

"The description is not the described; I can describe the mountain, but the description is not the mountain, and if you are caught up in the description, as most people are, then you will never see the mountain." ~ Jiddu Krishnamurti

awesome thread, I've always wanted more background on Live's music. Plus, I enjoy reading spiritual stuff like this so I think I'll give Krishnamurti a read. It's about time, since I've been a Live fan for so long and reading spiritual works regularly for the last few years.
