If I'm not mistaken, the name 'Live' was pulled out of a hat, and I think I remember reading somewhere that 'Live' was Ed's contribution to the hat, and he didn't really care for the name...

I actually remember them saying it was actually LIVE.....like , "i want to live" But people kept calling them live as in "This is a live animal" lol! So they just stuck with that. And yeah, i think the hat thing is true too.

earlier this year at the Jensen-talkshow (Holland) Ed was telling about the early days of Live, and when Jensen said that the band have had several names back than (like Public Affection), Ed told they don't wanted to have a real good namen, but just wanted to have THE MOST NAMELESS BAND NAME IN THE WORLD. haha, THe Who was already taken he said, so Live was pretty nameless too.

Seems like they could all go together. Maybe they wanted to come up with a "meaningless" name, so they all put them in a hat and 'Live' won. kicking.gif

The one I've always heard was the "pulled it out of a hat" one.

I remember it from the old Past, Present, and Future show. That show, also reveals how Throwing Copper was named.... If my memory is correct, some members of the band were out shooting BB guns and later, when asked what they were doing, they replied with, "We were throwin copper."

wherever they got it from, i myself think Live is a really cool name
it fits with their universal meaning on their first albums, just all about what's related to living people etc

And by that, I think if there's a band that can have this name, than it's this band, cause they are just such extremely good LIVE at stage...

While I agree that Live is kind of a cool name, it's a real bitch when Googling for them 'cuz 5 billion hits come up, or when searching on YouTube, or when asking for their cd in record stores, which quickly turns into a "Who's on First?" routine. So, yeah, I wish whoever pulled the name out of the hat had grabbed a different slip of paper.

The way I understood it was they wanted a new name from "Public Affection", they were all sitting around tv channel surfing & many of the channels had "Live" in corners indicating a live event, they liked the fact that they would get all the subliminal advertising by naming the band such so they did. Truthfully I've never heard the names in the hat story.

it seems like there is a lot of myth around their name. the one i heard was that they were joking around about wanting a name that was the total oppisite of EVIL and someone SAID isnt that LIVE and it stuck.

Remembering that this is just a myth so may just be the ranting of a drug addled mind.
