Go here

www.myspace.com/porcupinetree

The bass player in my band showed me some of their stuff yesterday, it's so totally wicked...reminds me of a little Stone Temple Pilots happy.gif , a little Pink Floyd and a little more grunt. Loving it.

Anyone heard of them? Seen them live?? This could just be my one of my new favourite bands smile.gif

Porcupine Tree is AWESOME! They are definately one of my favorite bands. I was just on their website 10 minutes ago hoping for a New England tour date, nothing yet. They have a few dates scheduled for the fall so far. They are doing a small tour to promote a Live DVD they have coming out in the fall. I can't wait for that, it's going to be great. I saw them in concert twice, they blew me away each time. I never saw anyone play guitar as fast as Steve Wilson, his fingers were just blurs. They have their melodic soft songs and increadible rockers. I even got to meet them last year, very cool guys. I'm on their Street Team so of course I think everyone should find out about them and go buy their Cds and the new DVD when it comes out.

Check out their official website out Porcupinetree.com

They have alot of albums out, most of which you could never find in the states unless you go to one of their shows. Thank God for EBAY.

Their latest CD Deadwing and the one previous to it, In Absentia can be found in stores. They are both Awesome albums. Their older stuff is great too. Lightbulb Sun is another favorite of mine.

I quite like the bits of it I've heard - their music definitely warrants more investigation. I can see what you mean about the STP sound (it's the guitars for me) and Pink Floyd. There's definitely a little Tool and NIN influence in there for me from the little I've heard, but more psychedelic and melodic than either.

I agree 100%. Porcupine Tree are now my second favorite band. I'll be seeing them on October 6 at the Nokia Theatre in NYC, and I know it will be absolutely sweet.

Right now, more than anything, I'm really excited about the new Blackfield album. The first one was just too good to be true, and I know the next will be even better. It should be released around August, I think. I also heard Blackfield will be touring in January/February, and NYC will be a sure stop. In addition, I'm a humongous fan of the No-Man project with Tim Bowness. I have not been able to stop listening to Flowermouth, and I own pretty much every No-Man CD (as opposed to The Tree, where I own everything).

Anyway, my favorite PT album is either Lightbulb Sun (as you may be able to notice by my avatar) or Up The Downstair. I find myself more intrigued by the earlier stuff, but the recent material is more musically adept overall, and I think In Absentia is easily their best album and masterpiece (I say best, not my favorite, because taste and actual quality are separate). Glad to see more and more people catching onto PT. There's hope in modern-day music after all.

By the way, I've downloaded some PT concerts, and if anyone else is interested in getting in on it, feel free to let me know.

Well what the hell is wrong with me that I've just discovered this band?! I was talking on another board about how all music sucks (a point someone else brought up) and they sent me some PT MP3's to show me that not ALL music sucks. I've heard people saying good things about them but just never got around to listening to their stuff. It's damn good.

I have been told to start out with In Absentia. Any other suggestions?

You biznatchio! Lol, nearly two years ago I directed you to them (or was it Jen). But yeah, In Absentia is the best place to start. Usually newcomers start with In Absentia and Deadwing and then afterwards explore their extensive back-catalogue, which is basically very psychadelic rockish with atmospheric long pieces and an absence of the heavier aspect which manifests itself in IA and DW. After In Absentia and Deadwing, Signify is probably a very good bet to get into their earlier stuff. Lightbulb Sun is also an option, because it's in their transition period from spacier stuff to heavier, more song-oriented music. Either way, it's pretty hard to go wrong with Porcupine Tree...there's also the new album which should be coming out in May or June. Hope you end up liking them as much as I do! (Which will mean you are overly obsessed and have to listen to them at least once a day.) Porcupine Tree is my favorite band of today.

I know, I know! I should have listened to you! I did listen I just never got around to listening to them. I guess I just needed for someone to send me some mp3s. From what I've heard I think it is safe to say I will become addicted. They just have so much music out there and the songs that I have heard so far are just so fucking good! Their music has so many layers and their lyrics are great. It's just what I need right now. I've just become so bored with most music out there and it's so nice to discover something worth listening to.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm ordering In Absentia today and then will go from there.

No problem, you'll be pleased :-)

It is very rewarding to be a Porcupine Tree fan -- there are tons of studio albums, a few live CD's, and Steven Wilson has various side-projects, including Blackfield (an album is due in January) and No-Man, my favorite. No-Man is absolutely either a hit or miss, most Porcupine Tree fans won't even like the music (on the first few tries, at least), but that's what makes them so special...I've basically become as addicted to No-Man as I have with Porcupine Tree. But that's a bridge to cross when you come to it...right now is the time for you to get that special feeling of hearing PT for the first few times and getting completely blown away. It's a freaking amazing feeling to get. I have very fond memories of hearing their albums for the first times, because of stuff happening in my life at the time but also from the sheer exhilaration of hearing such great music. Enjoy!

Thanks for letting me know of this band. I went to their myspace site and loved what I heard so I've ordered In absentia...
Collapse the light is so beautiful.

By the way, has anyone heard of Ghost machine? Any thoughts on them? Happened to stumble into their myspace and liked their stuff. Worth buying or?

As much as I love some of their music, they do have a lot of filler. Especially on In Absentia- though it also has some of their best music on.

swedeguy, do you like Opeth?
