Here is a question for those who consider "The Turn" a Live album:

Should Ed release a studio album containing new tracks, reworked Goose Blackstone songs, with his new group of musicians and then sticks the "Live" logo on it - would you also consider it an official Live album?

I consider "The Turn" a Live album because 3/4 of the members of the band were from the original lineup. You can absolutely hear Live in those songs. I also really liked what Chris Shinn did for the songs on it. I wasn't as much of a fan of his takes on the older material though, so I'm very torn. That said, ANY singer would have been compared to Ed, so that's a tough spot for anyone in that role to be in.

This new incarnation of Live is Ed with a backing band. I still don't count Zak Loy as a real member of Live, even though he's been there for almost a decade at this point. He's no CT (no one is), and I'm not a fan of his musical creations. The rest of the band is phoning it in like a Live cover band. There's no passion. There's no fire. They're not hungry for it. They're simply playing the same 12 songs every night and calling it good. Ed seems to be happy with things, but if I was the lead singer and other musicians were playing my songs, you bet your ass we'd work on them until they were up to my standards, and this is not that.

To answer your exact question though, I would consider a new Ed album as an official Live album, and just like Local 717 and Goose Blackstone, I'd play it once just to say I heard it and then move on.

To me, it's simple: Ed is using Live for the name and marketing pull. Live died when Ed fired CCP in 2022, but Ed won't pull an audience as Ed Kowalczyk like he can with Live, so here we are.

I'd totally accept that as well.

Man... it'd be cool if every 4 years or so they put out a new TGF album with a different singer. I'm pretty sure we talked about this back when that album came out, but I really think that'd be awesome.

I'd take a TGF album with J.R. Richards (Dishwalla) as a guest singer. I'd also love to see what Myles Kennedy (Alter Bridge, Slash/Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators) would bring as well.

JR richards is the nicest freaking guy. Really like his youtube channel. Very wholesome man. I'd argue that JR richards should be protected from CCP and bill hynes lol.

To answer your question, yes Dan. If ed puts metaphors in all the songs, puts at least one about water, and slaps a live logo on it then yes it is a live album to me. I'm desperate for a live album at this point - I'll take what I can get. tear.gif

The Live album I want is the unreleased songs album with all songs not released from 1998 era plus more.

As 3/4 of the real Live seem to do other things with Chad Gracey rambling on podds, Patrick invisible and Chad Taylor seem to be on constant vacation I rather have a new album with Ed’s cover band than nothing regardless what he wants to call the band.

I really don’t understand why they keep the outtakes in the drawer.

Sure. Whether someone likes it or not, if an album is functionally released as Live, then it's Live. At the same time, there's also the question of whether an album - regardless of whether it was functionally released as Live - is a Live album in spirit and/or artistically speaking. So you might start to classify albums like this...

Functionally Live / Spiritually Live
- Mental Jewelry
- Throwing Copper
- Secret Samadhi
- The Distance to Here
- The Turn

Functionally Live / Spiritually Not
- Songs From Black Mountain
- Local 717

Functionally Not / Spiritually Not
- The Gracious Few
- Alive

Functionally Not / Spiritually Live
- Not sure what album you'd put here.
- Maybe individual tracks like Zion.

Naturally, people will disagree on what goes where...

Nice.

I'll add...

Functionally Kinda / Spiritually Kinda
- V

Functionally Live / Spiritually Kinda
- Birds of Pray

And I'd throw in an adjustment for SFBM...

Functionally Kinda / Spiritually Not
- Songs From Black Mountain

I say kinda because even though they were still together and touring together as Live, functionally they were more akin to what Ed has going now. And I'd throw 717 into this adjustment too.

I agree, it's a spectrum thing. Something like...

IPB Image

I don't 100% stand by all those placements. Been looking at it too long already! lol.gif

I'm waiting for an anthology compilation of Live at this point. If the band truly is done for, then the least they could do for the hardcore fans is release all the unreleased stuff. Hell, they could release all the early Public Affection stuff and people would buy it!
