Gig Photos: +LIVE+ with Big Wreck and Econoline Crush at Canadian Tire Centre, March 6th, 2026
By Marc Lepage on March 7, 2026

Last night the Canadian Tire Centre was the place to be for fans of ’90s-era rock as Pennsylvania rock band +LIVE+ made a return to Canada with the Like A Rollin’ Thunder cross-country tour. The tour celebrates the 35th anniversary of their debut album Mental Jewelry, and they brought along some powerful Canadian content as well, with tour mates Econoline Crush and Big Wreck.

Openers Econoline Crush hit the stage with a powerful set of industrial rock-fuelled mayhem, kicking things off with “Home,” newer track “New Gold Magic” and the ultra-heavy “Wicked.” It’s always tough to be the earliest act, but the early crowd at CTC was into it, especially when they dropped classic single, “Sparkle and Shine,” about the pursuit of fame and validation, a song sparked by the deaths of musicians like Blind Melon’s Shannon Hoon and Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain.

Led by the incredibly talented guitarist/singer/songwriter Ian Thornley, Big Wreck’s set was a masterclass in musicianship as they played through a nine song set, bookended by two of their best known songs, “The Oaf” and “That Song,” both from the band’s 1997 debut.

In between was a rollercoaster ride of punishing riffs like those seen in “Bombs Away” and new track “Dog With a Gun,” offset by the awe-inspiring beauty of the eloquent slide guitar work in “Albatross” or the arena lit up with cell phones as the crowd sang along to the heart wrenching anthem of “Blown Wide Open.”

Another highlight of many recent Big Wreck shows has been their extended rendition of “Come Again” from one of Thornley’s solo albums in the early 2000s, which was highlighted by some incredible guitar harmonies between Thornley and second guitarist Chris Caddell. The band sounded great, and as a longtime fan, I loved the chance to see them on the big stage at the CTC.

Back in university, all three of these bands’ music frequently resonated through the rooms and halls of the house I shared with friends, and I fondly remember +LIVE+ frontman Ed Kowalczyk’s distinctive vocals from those days, yet somehow seeing them in concert eluded me for all these years, until last night.

Despite being the only remaining original member, as the vocalist and primary songwriter Ed is and was the focal point of the band, delivering high-intensity vocals over lyrics about social change, spirituality and life in general. Backed by the outstanding band, Ed’s vocals soared as they made their way through a set of classics like “Selling the Drama” and deeper cuts like “Horse,” which Ed joked was a throwback to the days of CDs, where the song was actually a hidden track at the end of the Throwing Copper disc.

LIVE’s set was dynamic and accentuated by vibrant lighting and a large video backdrop behind the band. The set included a new, unreleased song, entitled “Leave The Radio On,” which Ed said highlighted the important role music has in all of our lives, as both consumers and creators.

Ed repeatedly joked about a time machine taking us all back and forth throughout LIVE’s 30+ year career, which of course highlighted the 35th anniversary of Mental Jewellery with songs such as “Operation Spirit (The Tyranny of Tradition)” and “The Beauty of Gray.”

The band’s fourteen song set was punctuated by a three-song encore, which of course was capped off by the band’s biggest and most enduring hit, “Lightning Crashes,” which had thousands of arms in the air as Ed led the crowd through the final refrains of the song.

Given how heavy the news cycle has been lately, it was definitely a nice way to spend a Friday evening with a few thousand friends, forgetting about the world outside, and enjoying three great bands.

Don’t be mistaken, this wasn’t some sort of nostalgia concert where bands come out of retirement to cash in on yesterday’s hits. All three of these bands are still very much active — putting out new music, and delivering the goods in a way that would put many of their contemporaries to shame.

The Like a Rollin’ Thunder tour continues on with more dates across eastern Canada.
