QUOTE
During my childhood we had a racist neighbor that lived across the street. My friends and I named him The Grinch. Trust me, when we were playing kickball, whiffle ball, football, or any other sport, the last thing anyone wanted was to retrieve the ball from this grumpy man’s lawn. I thought he hated all kids equally, but when my black friend volunteered to bravely fetch a fly ball, The Grinch called him a n*gger! Now, I had honestly NEVER heard that word used but I knew even at the age of ten or eleven that The Grinch was an evil dude. I swear as I child I was so angry, I wanted to fight this grown-ass old man.

++ I was never a tattletale but even I knew to go find an adult. Luckily, my stepfather, a tough Vietnam veteran, happened to be in the house. “Uh, dad - The Grinch called my friend the ‘n’ word.”++ I was shocked to see my father’s eyes change focus. I had never seen him look so angry as he directed my friend and I to ‘stay inside’.

++ Of course, we ran to my bedroom, and opened the window facing The Grinch’s house - just in time to see my stepfather knock on his door. I was so scared for the outcome, after all the man had just threatened to use a gun. I had a feeling he was about to learn what a trained veteran could do to a racist fool with a gun.

++ When The Grinch opened the door, we could hear with clarity my stepfather speak the most Clint Eastwood sentiments I’ve ever heard any adult male say to another adult. I’ll let your imagination run with the details. The Grinch smartly coward and closed his door. ++ My friend and I instantly rolled with laughter most likely releasing the horrific stress and fear that had been built-up. Thankfully, no one was physically hurt but I know I was never the same again - I can’t imagine the scars my friend faced.

++ I never forgave The Grinch and from that day forward, I swore to defend any human being who was being bullied for the color of their skin. Racism is very real and it’s why black lives matter to me. Warning to all Grinch’s. You’re finally on notice.++
