Kinda strange how CCP say they had to listen to old Live records to learn how to be Live again. Back in the day when they put music on those records, they were just being themselves.

I don't know, when you're not doing something for so long, its easy to forget who you really are or why you are doing what you are doing. Sometimes surrounding or immersing yourself in something can jolt a lot of emotion and drive. It's not necessarily figuring out how to emulate something, but how to get that feeling back.

Exactly. You could say Live doesn't live in CCP anymore. They can only study their former selves and try to replicate the elements. They're only inspired by Live.

Considering most of The Turn seems to be an expressive reaction to the past 13 years of creative frustration, don't you think it's fairly appropriate for Live to be the main inspiration for this record?

Great question.

First, don't forget TGF. CCP's creative juices have been flowing just fine for the past 5 years.

My instinct is to say no, it is not appropriate to be inspired by Live when making a Live album. Just be Live. Otherwise CCP may end up rehashing Throwing Copper samples in the new album. Otherwise the singer might sing old lyrics and have no idea what they are.

You're right about TGF, and I kind of hate the blatant TC samples in The Turn. I guess The Turn just works for me. I'm not saying I want another album exactly like this one, but I consider it to be one of the better items in the Live catalog.

Seriously though, I think there is no shame in being inspired by your own work. Inspiration does not equate to imitation. I personally don't sense any resemblance between TC and TT, even with the throwbacks in some of the intro samples. TC is a classic that had that perfect complexion of philosophy themed, angst-driven rock and is much more pop oriented than people like to admit. TT is heavier than anything they have done. for me Live is about moods, and ANYTHING they have done, in fact, ANY music has its place in my world depending on how I feel, some more than others obviously. Why the fuck create art if not to inspire others? So why should the same not apply to yourself?

But Chad said they forgot what Live sounded like, and imitated old Live albums.

Be inspiring but be original!

I like the album but it's strange to me to hear the guys going about the album this way. I hardly ever hear of a band forgetting what they do to make music.

he has mentioned it before in regards to the tempo of the songs. If you watch Live at paradiso, the songs are mutilated, in my opinion, because of how fast they are played. As the years went on the band changed the way they played the individual songs (maybe to fit more into a set?) and going back to learn how they used to play the material is entirely valid as any artist would tell you about their particular craft. Most seasoned drivers would fail a practical exam miserably should they be put to the test, because we all develop bad habits and shortcuts over the years due to laziness, arrogance, ignorance or just complacency. Like driving with your knees while shaving your vagina (this actually happened recently)

Im guessing you will come back with "but I drive with my hands at 10 and 2 whilst checking my mirrors every 4 seconds..." lol.gif

well, did you listen to the interview? in order to make new Live music they listened to the old albums because they forgot how Live sounded, not cause they were trying to relearn how to play old songs.
