QUOTE

Given Kowalczyk’s history as a songwriter, it’s easy to give him the benefit of the doubt. As the lead vocalist of Live, Kowalczyk’s righteous fury and earnest, searching spirit earned the band a devoted group of fans left behind by Seattle’s grime. “Lightning Crashes” is one of the few lasting anthems of the ‘90s, a “Circle of Life”-style parable that actually comes across as sincere and authentic thanks largely to the vivid imagery of Kowalczyk’s lyrics.

The benefit of the doubt should allow us to see “Drive” as an aberration. And we do, until “Drink (Everlasting Love)” arrives with a refrain that is every bit as awful as “Drive”:

Now I’ll drink you like water
Drink you like freedom
Drink you like the nectar that falls from Eden

Drink you like water
Drink you like the everlasting love

So…you drink freedom? You drink “everlasting love”? Is Eden in the sky? Why is nectar falling from it?
What in God’s name is Kowalczyk talking about?

now after the fire is in his ears and he sees the pitchforks at his back...he gives us this!!!

QUOTE
RISE-

Oh!
Fighters on the ridge
Takin' their aim at me
and scaring off my kin
I won't run away
I'm gonna stand my ground
no matter what it takes
Posse on the way
bringin' a ball and chain to hang around my leg

Can we rise?
Can we fly?
Just to fall out of the sky
Like a shooting star burning in the night
Oh, how high we climb
Do we fall?
Just to spin out of control
Anything is better than feeling paralysed
Oh, when we rise

Oh
Fighters on the ridge
They got it out for me
and looking for revenge
I did nothing wrong
I'm gonna stand my ground
and show them who is strong
Posse on the way
Cover their tracks by night to move on me by day

Can we rise?
Can we fly?
Just to fall out of the sky
Like a shooting star burning in the night
Oh, how high we climb
Do we fall?
Just to spin out of control
Anything is better than feeling paralysed
Oh, when we rise

<guitar solo>

Can we rise?
Can we fly?
Just to fall out of the sky
Like a shooting star burning in the night
Oh, they came to fight
but they will fall
and the glory of the Lord
will shine like blinding light
in their wicked eyes
Oh, in their wicked eyes

jsut remember this......

they were at their collective best when they performed this to tape!!

Rythym section, lyrics, cohesiveness, magic.....perfection......

when one decided his way was more important, you got the gibberish at the top!!! Remember that!!!

Agreed, she does have a tendency to do that to threads. Thanks for reposting, now everyone can see that to go from MJ level lyrics to this.. yeah, there's no mistake Ed's lyrical writing skills have diminished over the years. You only have to read so much to see it. la la de da... indeed

They should use these lyrics in English classes to show how not to write.

It still blows my mind that 16/17yr old Ed was writing better songs than 38yr old Ed.

Ed's got a comfy life now, nice house, family, money, travel, supposedly comfortable in his belief... Dude is on easy street compared to many of us, and good for him i guess; there is nothing left to challenge or push him creatively. So all he has to draw on now is talking about how good everything is, and it's so fucking boring. He is not at his best when he writes like that.
But it's left him creatively bereft. I saw someone on Facebook quote his lyric "like a shooting star in the night" as "amazing" ... Really? REALLY? THAT amazes you? Fuck people like that must about have a heart attack when they see that turning a door handle and pushing actually allows them access to a room! How amazing is that?!

It's not all about the content, he proved on TDTH he can be positive and uplifting without being creatively bust. Now he's just... On auto pilot. Honestly his lyrics aren't average now, they're absolutely putrid. People might like them, that's fine, but that does NOT make them good. It just means they like shit.

He was still a hungry song writer, a guy with drive, and hardships that inspired him to be more creative. He had more to lose, never making it, having to go back to a 9-5 job, lyrically speaking, purely on lyrics, which we know are Ed's as even CT admitted that; 16/17yr old Ed wipes the floor with 38yr old Ed, even something like Paper Flowers, it was silly, it wasn't great, but it was childish innocence ... If Ed at this age made that song, the sad thing is I wouldn't be surprised and there would just be Jesus references in there somewhere too.
The fact is, his lyric writing on DOAD is better than Alive/Garden EP. Raising a man, Who put the fear in here, hands of a teacher ... fuck that shits all over "like a shooting star.."

they had their moment when they decided to go it with the band. College decisions were looming and they were cohesive to move forward and the support of their parents. You have to ask yourself a question, the band was their life, their livelihood. The music and lyrics fit like a glove, even on DOAD. Why did one person's greedy ambitions need to push forward into something which was not the band or the successful dynamic.

I simply ask, I know the answer but to foster discussion and keep it going. sounds like we have some good foundations and basis.

I believe Benjamin Franklin knows the answer to this riddle!

This is my theory on Eds decline in lyric writing. I work with a few born again christians and there is a definite difference in the way they approach life ( and I dont mean in the jebus way). Firstly they accept totally their beliefs , in that they dont question them. Then they are persitent in their attempts to recruit you to their vision , even if you debate them endlessly on science ect.. There is also an air about them that they believe they are right about everything and there is no need to question things, even to the point that they ignore critisism.

I am definitely no mental giant , just an inquisitive person, I dont accept things people say without questioning them and Ive have heaps of conflicts in my life so even at my age I have alot to work out and I dont think I could write Lyrics that would move anyone..maybe make them vomit yes but inspire ...no.

...so here is Ed a person who has found his god, and there I see his total belief in his abililty to write great lyrics (because in his mind he did before..MJ TC ect.)... but there is no questioning , no conflict, no debate to be had... because he believes he is right in his beliefs and his course in life (as well as no other band members to work with ,and so this is why he picked up session musos to work on ALIVE with ).. so we get these banal, obvious ,cliched lyrics that he believes are brilliant... which from his perspective they are, because they convey what he wants his message to be........

My take is Ed has simplified his lyrics ever since TDTH. He knows the reason more than us for this but it may have been to appeal more to the mainstream and radio. I really liked Ed's mysterious lyrics on MJ, TC and SS. It got a little too simple for me after that but i still rate Ed as a great song writer. Some people I find are being overly critical here.

Possibly the appeal to mainstream more, or just lost the ability, lost his creative spark and edge. Sometimes people only have it for a short while and then it's gone.

They are a lot more than overly critical here... stick around. Trust me.
They are just plain nasty about Ed.
It's okay for them to worship the other former members and lord help you if you say anything negative about them.
We are not allowed to express our love for eds music but they can say good things about the others and that's okay. [Which haven't done anything yet]Still waiting.

Um. There is a legal action against your wine buddy. The band is moving on for the better, w/o Ed. Deal with it. You've been about portraying your bitch personna for a long time now. Proven a liar a few times over with actual information. Um.....meow
