Get the vote out, peeps!
Do your civic duty, all you Americans.

Maine is also voting on gay marriage...AGAIN.
ugh, do we learn nothing from how we've treated minorities in the past, why does it take us so freakin' long to wise up?
Ok, rant over.

Yeah voting here is mandatory lest you get fined unlike in the US. That has its good and bad points.

yikes... so how much would the typical fine be for a first time offense. Do they toss your ass in jail if you don't pay the fine?

I thought it was a $70 fine, but according to online:

"Initially the Australian Electoral Commission will write to all apparent non-voters requesting that they either provide a reason for their failure to vote or pay a $20 penalty.

If, within 21 days, the apparent non-voter fails to reply, cannot provide a valid and sufficient reason or declines to pay the penalty, then prosecution proceedings may be instigated. If the matter is dealt with in court and the person is found guilty, he or she may be fined up to $50 plus court costs."

Not exactly ball busting, but AN incentive I guess.

It's good and bad, I think if you can vote then you should to have a say in the shaping of your country. On the downside, a heap of people who just don't give a shit are forced to vote who are uneducated in the policies of the parties vying for government and may decide to vote based on the fact they don't like the sound of the prime minister's voice as opposed to the policies she is putting forward. That person probably wouldn't be bothered going to vote if they weren't made to and so their nothing vote unfortunately gets counted.

Minimal, but still...

Yeah, I'm not sure how good it is to have people voting simply cos they must.
I like to think that people have educated themselves before heading to the polls, if they don't really wanna be voting, they're simply checking boxes.... sure, they're participating but are they really?
Has that always been the policy there?

as long as i've been enrolled to vote, yes. One of the reasons I take voting very seriously, is because your employer is legally required to let you leave work for as long as it takes to cast your vote!

hahaha... so how long do you end up milking the voting process for?
I can see you punching in early, leaving to vote, and arriving back five minutes before it's time to punch out. lol.gif

Romney opposes pro-choice and gay marriages. Ergo, he's terrible.

Obama FTW.

And that, in a nutshell, is exactly why he didn't receive my vote, Merica.

Well, like i said, i don't vote.
Mainly because i don't understand politics at all.
Someone told me i made the right choice because if i don't understand there really is no point in voting.
