in a nutshell, what lyric can sum up what +live+ was/is all about...?

I throw these two quotes into the the discussion:

There was void and then that water broke...then something called "me"

this is such a powerful phrase which evaded my radar for many years despite having heard it thousands of times...mainly because it happens in an ordinary part of a song im not too fond of... but seeing it quoted here on these forums awakened me to its existence,,, such an honest description of being born into this strange life! mind blowing in its simplicity.

It's the memory that hides the whole wide world

Again, simple yet immeasurably profound in wisdom. This is Krishnamurti 101: Memory, being knowledge, being the past and our natural evolutionary reliance on it, is the single most obvious hindrance to a bigger understanding of reality, life, our potential...etc.

discuss

First thing that bumps across my mind is "love will lead us"

In a universal sence. Such a meaningful lyric to me, I can not even explain it. Thought of getting a tatoo with this one.

But I know, for sure, that there are more powerful quotes in their lyrics than this one.

"calm the space that makes you hollow"
I feel like it goes in tandem with "love will lead us"

I think that's why SS is my go to on my worst of days. that's what the music does for me... calms that space. I feel like that's what the first 4 albums do.

"I've got to learn to live until no end. But I've got to learn to swim all over again, because..."

I think this applies everyone, but it could definitely define Live's philosophy, both then when the lyric was written and now.

As I have become a father, and about to become a father again, I've found this line to be more significant in my life. There was nothing and then there was life. I understand the biology of how life starts, but on some sort of metaphysical level, the nothing then something is still a miracle. I guess it's rooted in consciousness and the fact of being self-aware. It's no so much that my children are physically there with their own little bodies but rather that there was nothing, and then there was (from their perspective) me.

This is so hard to do. But I think that Live's most important philosophies are two-fold. The earlier stage of Live on MJ and TC was predominantly about urging everyone to break free from the limiting confines of blindly adopting the beliefs and conditioning of teachers and authorities, and to find the truth for yourself, within your self. The second, later message of Live was to describe what Ed apprehended about our spiritual nature, which is found on SS TDTH and V.

On the subject of what we are spiritually:

We Walk In The Dream "I was wrong. We are not these bodies alone"

On the subject of rejecting authoirty and teachers and finding the trust within yourself:

Peace is Now

poets and preachers and politicians
they've all had their say
and we got 10,000 years
devoted to nothing
but tomorrow and yesterday

The entirety of the lyrics to Top:

this is not helping me at all
what you are doing here
in the name of God and Love
it's the distribution of fear
pyramids, healing wines, analysts with fame
I haven't got your degree
and I forgot your name

pick me up and put me on the ground
set me up and spin me all around
no, you are not the one I wish to see

this is not helping me at all
where did we get this plan?
that you could give to me
what I might already have
pyramids, healing wines, a musician's fame
I volunteered you my eyes
In place of facing me

oh Hitler, in a robe of truth
my emptiness has built your altar
and I've worshipped myself in you forever
until now!

There was void and then that water broke...then something called "me"

You nailed it for that one, so simple but so great.

I thought I knew exactly what scared me
And I would never have to run again
So I went to sleep and began dreaming
Of perfect lives and paradise
Woke up and started screaming

I love this one as its light years ahead of what so many people around that age (what, 17?) could ever write (the irony now being 40 and not being able to still do it is sad). But again its the simplicity, believing that you know what your fears are and that you're on top of things, so you sleep and you dream of how much better life actually could be than what you're living, so you wake up and face the reality. At least that's what I take from it.

The face and ghost my guide
I must move on
It's the face of one ravaged by love
It's both dead and alive

Still one of my favorite Live songs, someone who has seen the highest highs love brings and the lowest lows that come with it as well. Exploring both sides of the coin, of love, spirituality whatever it may be.

I'm sure there are heaps more, but I'm tired and going to bed.

Oh wow... I never noticed that lyric either... that is gold.

Mine is a classic but it really gets at LIVE for me:

our love is like water
pinned down and abused

The love of the world is capable of flowing, capable of being everywhere and raining down from the sky. We are made of it, it sustains us, and we can't live without it. At the same time, Humanity has created extreme measures to control and pin down water and love. Water has irrigation systems and dams and as we all know society has rules as to what kind of love is okay. Water is abused through pollution and love is polluted by the pollution of endless wars.

I think the lyrics of Run to the Water are incredible and are a good representation of the philosophy of Live.
