I've noticed that a majority of downloads that are put on this site are through Mediafire. Is this because it is a reliable place to get downloads? I've been talking with friends who have stated that blog sites are also a good resource for music.
Are there other reliable online resources to get downloads for free?

Mediafire is a file hosting site. You can upload whatever you want there. There are countless sites like Mediafire - each have their positives and negatives. Mediafire is good because you can upload large files to the site and they also stay online indefinitely (while people keep downloading them). Another positive for Mediafire is that you can get excellent download speeds without having to purchase a 'premium' account and there's no limit to how much you can download per hour.

That's the downside of many of the file hosting sites (e.g Rapidshare, Filesonic, Hotfile, Megaupload) - free users (ie people who don't pay for a premium account) are limited to slower download speed, you need to wait in a queue (30-40 seconds) before you can start downloading and there are limits to the number of files you can download in an hour.

These file hosting site offer no way of searching. For example, you can't search for Metallica's latest album via Mediafire. The only way to get links to files is by people posting them. I recommend using a forum such as http://www.warez-bb.org - This is a message board where people post links to files they upload to these file sharing sites. You'll be able to find albums, applications, tv episodes, movies, books - pretty much anything you want by searching through the appropriate categories on the warez-bb.org site. There are other sites that do a similar thing.

What sort of music are you after? If you're after concert recordings, then I recommend checking out www.dimeadozen.org and www.thetradersden.org - these are BitTorrent sites. If you're after studio albums then I recommend doing the right thing an paying for it. But I'm sure you'll be able to find what you're looking for if you search around.
