Make sure you check out Kevin Martin and The Hiwatts - The Possibility of Being. Outstanding album.

Just wondering...how is the sound of the Hiwatts different from Candlebox? Curious, because maybe I would like them better than Candlebox.

If you can tell me what it is you don't like about Candlebox, I can give you a more fair description.

As it is, the Hiwatts were harder and the album is really raw, but it is a similar rock style. Crazy drum parts, ridiculous guitar solos, and lots of dynamics. I don't really see what's not to like about it but I love awesome musicianship and Kevin's voice, that's what the Hiwatts and Candlebox do.

Actually, I don't hate Candlebox or anything. I only known what I've heard on the radio from them and some stuff I like and some stuff I don't. Maybe if I heard more of them, I would have a better idea how I feel about Candlebox. I was suppose to see them in concert a couple of months ago, but something came up and I couldn't make it.

Thanks for the description smile.gif

I can see how excited everyone is about Kevin's posts as well fans should be. I think it would be exciting for Ed to post, too. However, I have read and heard where many celebrities and politicians try not to look at fan forums. I think they hear a lot in everyday life about their talents/performances/etc. To go into a forum such as this, certain things said or implied might be hard to take. I would think that their personal interactions with fans at their shows would be what ties them to their fan base and I have heard that Ed has always been welcoming in that way, offering photos with fans, etc.

Also, I don't think he would be wise and probably has been told by his lawyer not to comment on the lawsuit. Opens the door for something being said which could be taken out of context, etc.

I agree about the lawsuit, I admit I was just trying to rile people up. smile.gif

As for the other part of the post, I think that it used to be this way. However, with the growth of the internet more and more artists have begun interacting with their fans on forums, Twitter, Facebook, etc. Amanda Palmer, Matthew Good, the guys from Guster, are just a few that I follow who actively engage their fan communities. TGF has done an exceptional job of this and I think it has won them some fans. These aren't artists who are going multi-platinum anytime soon, but both Ed and TGF fall into that camp now and this is part of building the fan base.

Talking to fans after shows is great and all (I'm glad all of the Live guys are doing this now), but usually those interactions are at a merch booth and there isn't a "real" conversation. They are out there whether they want to be or not because they need to push merch. Coming to a message board and posting takes more initiative, and I'd say, more balls.

I definitely recommend Candlebox's first album. It has a great sound. The band matured a lot after it, but they didn't stick with the sound of the first album as much and it polarized some fans. Kind of similar to Live after TC, actually.

I always liked both bands because they seemed to change and grow with each release.

If you like guitaring Peter Klett is absolute gold.

You recommended this to someone else in another post months ago, I think and I actually came across it one day in a store recently, and I must say, it does have a great sound!

I got the tape, well, the remnants of it. I used it so much that it died in a tapey tape player mess.

the first Candlebox record is one of my favorite albums of all-time. Ive been listening to it since 93 (when I was 12 - had it on cassette back then) and I still cant get enough of it. Lucy is really good too, but give the first record time before you move on if you want to hear more CB.

Happy Pills and Into the Sun both have some really great tracks too. I liken Lucy to Secret Samadhi, both are darker albums that don't really sound much like their predecessor. The first album is complete gold though, even the b-sides are really great.

I wish the Hiwatts had gotten more attention, its got some of Kevin's best songs on it.

Heh, I could go off about all albums KM-related, but I dont want to bore the LIVE fans. But yeah, you hit the nail on the head. The Hiwatts record is fantastic, and I loved the recent CB record. I was fortunate enough to see all the songs performed live over various shows - well, I think I missed "Lover Come Back To Me", but thats ok.

It's also worth mentioning that Sean Hennessy was an integral component in The Hiwatts. Obviously, he was in Candlebox as well but his roll with Candlebox was not in the studio/recording/writing process, it was as a touring guitarist while his role in The Hiwatts was as a true member of that band in every sense of the word. Thus, the influence of his playing and style is felt heavily on the Hiwatts record. This is a major difference in approach between Candlebox and The Hiwatts.

As for Candlebox, I love the Lucy and Happy Pills records but I would encourage anybody who has not yet picked up Into the Sun, to do so. It is the most accessible record since the first one and has some absolutely fantastic moments. It's a really solid rock record that carries all the way through. Plus, Kevin's voice really shines on Into the Sun.

Just downloaded Lucy and am digging this album already! Some songs remind me of the Far Behind sound but most are different. Drowned, Lucy, anf Vulgar Before Me are my two favs so far. Now I have even more new music to listen too along with TGF! rockin.gif

I thought this warranted its own thread on this board and not in the "Other Music" section. Dan if you'd like to move the C-box discussion from the "Another Great Promotion" thread that might make it more readable!

Who likes what Candlebox stuff? Show reviews? B-sides?
