Full Setlist:

01 Just in time (Alive)
02 The great beyond (Alive)
03 The distance (The distance to here - Live)
04 All over you (Throwing copper - Live)
05 Selling the drama (Throwing copper - Live)
06 Zion (Alive)
07 Drive (Alive)
08 The dolphin's cry (The distance to here - Live)
09 Soul whispers (Alive)
10 Drink (Everlasting love) (Alive)
11 Stand (Alive)
12 Heaven (Birds of pray - Live)
13 I alone (Throwing copper - Live)
14 Overcome (V - Live)
Encore 1
15 Fire on the mountain (Alive)
16 The beauty of grey (Mental jewelry - Live)
17 Grace (Alive)
18 Rome (Alive)
19 They stood up for love (The distance to here - Live)
Encore 2
20 Lightning crashes (Throwing copper - Live)
21 Dance with you (The distance to here - Live)

The drummer, who was the brother of the bassplayer, was quite good. Overall it was an impressive concert, Ed was in a really good mood, and as it was hot in the theater, his shirt was soon drenched in sweat, he opened it up for some songs and later buttoned it again.

It had been awhile since I had seen Ed (at that time still with Live) perform an older classic like I alone being performed made my eyes moist. Other "Live"-highlights for me: Heaven, The beauty of grey, They stood up for love and Lightning crashes. 'The distance' on the other hand does nothing for me and I could have done without that song and a better replacement.

From the new songs I liked besides the obvious "Grace", Fire on the mountain and especially Drive and Drink (everlasting love) best, Rome shouldn't be an encore imho, not one of the better songs.

The performance lasted almost 2 hours and it was sold out, great atmosphere, the band and Ed were really into it, shame, they didn't allow me to bring my camera, otherwise I would have put some songs on You Tube. I really liked this gig.

hmm... now there's a new thread for Heerlen, I'll post again

QUOTE
We can start a new thread for every European show ofcourse, but maybe better to keep it to one or a few threads, so I'll post my Heerlen-review here. Saw Ed and his band just tonight near my hometown (which was very special so close)l, and I've gotta say, I really enjoyed it.

You all can read my review of May 5th, in which I also honest admit that I thought his band wasn't that good, not many interaction and they were raping Lakini's Juice. So I'm not someone who close my eyes for the wrong or painfull things when it comes to Live/Ed.

But tonight was so much better than when I saw them the first time earlier this year. Oke, I know that they only played 1 time together before that time, and I know it was crappy sound outside, not to mention that nobody knew his new songs back then. But daimmmn, they have really improved since than.

Maybe that I - in contrast to some people that were dissapointed in some recent (European) shows - was better prepared for the fact I wasnt going to Live. The fact that it wasnt that good the first time also prepared me for what to expect. And what I saw (and heared) was quite a surprise!

Ed's voice was EXTREMELY good (F*CK, he's still such a good singer man, no matter what anyone will ever say), and the band - as I said - really improved. You coul clearly sense they toured for some time together now (in the US). Maybe some LIVE-songs didnt sound as good as played by LIVE, but some other wre REALLY refreshing. And not refreshing as they changed Lakini's Juice earlier this year, but nice refreshing, while it did still justice to the songs. Overcome (appearently you can rock on this song?!), I Alone and Beauty of Grey and others sounded better than ever before.

New songs also really surprised me. I liked a few songs on Alive (cd), but in these live versions there was not any song that I didnt like (yep, even The Great Beyond was made a good rock song). Zion was really the highlight for me and almost brought some old school Live feeling back in the way it was built up, performed and rocked out. Awesome. Stand didnt really convinced as tghey werent able to bring the sound it should have, on stage. Drive, Grace and Drink were quite decent. And if Soul Whispers (as performed tonight) would be a Live song, I would be proud to be Live-fan again! (oke, oke, I'm still proud to be Live fan anyway, don;t worry wink.gif.

Much more to tell, but all togetyher they quite impressed me and also suprised me in a certain way. I know it sounds like Ed says he feels it's really refreshing to play with these new people, just to break with his Live past. But after tonight I believe he means this, honestly. Although CC&P are better musicians, in some way Ed couldve been tired of how they played (like everyone, they have their own style), and now he plays with these new people, it feels refrehing in some way. Btw, I dont know if the sound was bad in utrecht, and that this caused some of the negative feelings some had, but sound in Heerlen theatre was good, no compaining.

that's it for now! Gotta get some sleep.

ps. Adam kowalczyk suddenly rocks out much more as a guitarist on the foreground. Give the man one year and he takes Chad Taylor's place smile.gif (not that anyone can fill his place, but you know what i mean).
ps.2 that Ramy drummer really made me laugh. he's not Gracey, but he's certainly NOT as bad as everyone says and the energy and joy he brought to the show was really nice!

Btw, Ralphy... I'm quite sure Ramy (the original drummer of Ed's band) was back. Don't know who you saw? tongue.gif The basists' brother joined them earlier this week.

In Paradiso Ramy was the playing drummer.
He made a great performance.
I think that it is normal that he also was present (and playing) in Heerlen.

Yup, Ramy was behind the drums at the show in Heerlen:

Given how long this band plays together, it is understandable that the performances are not very consistent yet. I hear the show at Heerlen was better than the ones in Vredenburg and Paradiso, so it appears the band is quite capable, and I had bad luck. I hope they play a lot of shows and bring a better sound engineer next time smile.gif

I'm listing the direct links at Lazyrocker.com for the review of the concert and the photo album.

In reading through the review, I would imagine that this quote will annoy those of you who don't seem to support Ed and have bad feelings about his previous relationship/breakup with the rest of Live, now The Gracious Few. It is a subject debated a lot recently and the opinion of the Lazyrocker reviewer:

"If you closed your eyes that night you were listening to the best of Live because the heart and soul of both that band and the new band is Ed Kowalczyk. It doesn’t matter who is playing behind him. He is the voice, no doubt about that!"

This is the entire, short review of the concert:

Ed Kowalczyk Still "Alive

Summer is almost over, so is the festival season. First indoor gig LazyRocker.com attended in September 2010 is ex-Live frontman Ed Kowalczyk's gig in a sold out Parkstad Limburg Theaters in Heerlen, The Netherlands.

Ed Kowalczyk has built an impressive résumé with his Live-bandmates that includes eight full-length albums, total CD sales exceeding 20 million (’94's “Throwing Copper” sold over eight million units to date), a huge international fan base and extensive touring all over the world. Live has been one of the most successful and enduring alternative rock bands of the 1990s and 2000s. After the break with Live the dynamic vocalist went on and recorded his first solo album called "Alive" which was released in June 2010.

As already said Kowalczyk has moved on to form a new band and take them into the studio to record a fabulous new solo album called “Alive”. This release continues where Live left off and presents that patented mix of 11 excellent catchy and impassioned rock tunes filled with the spiritual messages that Kowalczyk’s writing is known for. Compared to older Live albums this "Alive" is more melodic and polished, but it rocks anyway.

At exactly 21.30 hrs Eddie's band entered the stage of the 'Limburg Zaal' in the Parkstad Limburg Theaters in Heerlen to start the intro tune. When Ed Kowalczyk walked onto the stage the crowd of course went wild. Kowalczyk is not tall or big, but you have to keep looking at him because he's very charismatic. He really filled the stage with his presence. The intro launched into “Just In Time,” a tune off the new CD. In fact he played almost all tracks from "Alive". Highlights were the beautiful "Soul Whispers", the single "Grace", the with Chris Daughtry co-written "Drink (Everlasting Love)" and of course the great rockers "Stand" and "Drive".

The scorching set also included a healthy dose of his Live songs, including "All Over You", "Selling The Drama", "The Dolphin's Cry", "Heaven" (dedicated to all the mothers in the room), "Overcome" (with great drum work), "I Alone" and three majestic tracks to finish this great evening "They Stood Up For Love", “Lightning Crashes” and "Dance With You".

If you closed your eyes that night you were listening to the best of Live because the heart and soul of both that band and the new band is Ed Kowalczyk. It doesn’t matter who is playing behind him. He is the voice, no doubt about that!

It may sound weird, but at some moments on friday night i had that 'when you close your eyes'-moment. And no, that's not because I think "Ed's voice was Live and Live was Ed's voice", cuz that's just bullshit.

When you close your eyes at Ed's show:

A. You don't wanna see him hopping around stage half-naked.
B. You have an empty wallet when you open your eyes.
