I remember my shock.

I was browsing FANSOL and saw the official hiatus quotes.

It was really a shock and it did not let me go the whole day.

Horribke year that was.

I lost my family, then my mom got ill, then I lost Live, then I lost Oasis.

Well, I never thought LIVE would split up so I was shocked last year this time.

Now, I like both projects that have come out of the split but I do remain hopeful that the band will reconcile someday and get back together.

Wow I can't believe it's been a year either! I just remember thinking it was about time that they broke up. I felt like it was long over due. The only thing that made me sad is that they went out without ever having made good music together again and I still get sad when I look back at how great they once were. Oh well at least we'll always have the good music they made and the good memories.

No shit, a year.

Damn.

Something I've begun working at is my ability to deceive myself when the truth is right in front of me.
I knew that if things didn't get better for them, they would splinter in one way or another, yet when it happened (albums becoming less inspired, Ed beginning his solo shows, then his website then the hiatus), even still, I bullshit myself into believing that it would all be ok.
Somehow.
I think this stems from the immense love and admiration I had for their words and music, it felt like a relative dying or your folks divorcing.
Something monumental.
Anyway, I was a real cock~fuck to be around following the breakup and the ensuing reasons.
This is a lesson for me in people being human, with flaws and how I deal with my expectations not being met.
I hope that they may work out their issues with or without reforming.
That's all.

Yes, I remember how I felt as well it hit me pretty hard in one way, but I like so many I had mixed emotions and knew something was wrong. I'd agree that it felt like losing a family member in some ways, because so many of us have followed these guys for quite awhile (myself since 1991). It still feels funny not scheduling trips to see the boys for multiple shows during the summer/fall. I know that too many of us put too much stock into this band and that's why it hurts so much, but life marches on and enjoy what we had, as much as I love this band I wouldn't want them back as they were in the end. I used to be really upset about having to sell my tickets for the next to last show in Cleveland, but I'd rather just keep the last memory of them in my head when things were better.

Honestly, my response was pretty blah. I was happy that they broke up since the quality of their work (and the imagination in their releases) had been dwindling for some time. I took the news in stride, as I had been expecting it. They seemed to be drifting farther apart with each passing year, and Ed was taking too much of a centre stage. I thanked them for 4 great albums, 2 mediocre ones, and 1 utter failure. Overall, Live became a doomed project. And, the fans didn't help! Yes, I'll attack the fans! How many of us kept holding out for "Throwing Copper 2"? We knew it wouldn't happen. These guys were way past the mid-'90s post-grunge phase and so was every other band. To maintain any merit in the music world Live had to adapt to changing trends, but the trends that sprung up in the aftermath of the "alternative" scene had no room for Live. The late-'90s were dominated by rap-core and boy/girl bands. The early 2000s saw a huge rise for both groups, but also gave rise to the teen-pop soloists (Britney, Justin, etc...). Not to mention hip-hop saw a new wave with the r&b club hit thing. (Ever go to a club in 2003? You couldn't hide from it with an invisible cloak!) These things dominated the airwaves. Live didn't stand a prayer. And, without being inundated with their style of music every day, I think the band gradually lost its connection to itself and tried to become something they fundamentally could not be. They were not made to survive the transition from post-grunge to what we have today. They're not a 1-hit-wonder. They're maybe a 10-hit wonder. But, they had no chance of adapting their style to what the mainstream dictated was hot.

So yeah, I was pleased to see Live quit. A little disappointed that they didn't get to say that they quit while they were ahead, but pleased that they didn't further embarrass themselves with countless more mundane records.

Thunder and lightning outside. No time to spellcheck. Just posting.

That was my general response on the breakup as well. I'm just glad I went along on the ride while it lasted. In my opinion, they released 5 great albums and 2 utter failures (V and SFBM). Overcome was the only great song that came out of those failures. I'm actually glad they went their own way. And I hope Ed continues to write his own music. I like his new album and he hope he writes more songs like Eat Your Love.

Btw, Swami, are you aware Ed released a solo album? I was looking for your review one day, you seem to be one of the rational ones around here, and I noticed you only post in Live Central. That would be pretty funny if you had no idea. lol.gif
