I can see people stating Ed's songs and lyrics "don't have a meaning at all" nowadays, but as this man has been a real inspiration with his lyrics for me, I think it's good to start a thread about the meaning of his newer songs. They might look more simple or bland, you can think what you want, but it's always interesting to discuss the lyrics.

By that, I think it's cool of Ed he explains on Facebook what Grace is about for example (after he was asked to).

QUOTE
Ed Kowalczyk (Ed K) Hi P Celine, the "who" that is "wrong" in the Grace lyric isn't really directed at anyone in particular. It's directed at the worldview that denies grace, or reasons for hope, the view that maintains that there isn't an ultimate purpose or meaning to life. Funny thing is, even people of faith, like i consider myself, need to be reminded of it constantly. "Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."

So nothing TGF related (not that I expected that). A quite universal message, like Forever.

To be honest, it could be directed at TGF. He wouldn't say if it was, would he?

Good idea for a thread as well. Hopefully we'll have some more meanings trickling in.

That's true but he also could've just ignored the question if the meaning was about TGF.

I agree about the thread...great idea!

\true, true, but do you think that he would link the 'friendship with the other guys' he had with the word Grace? He acts like he doesnt really care about them (anymore), so why writing a song in which he says that "they were wrong" because "there was grace"?

Don't say you can't be right smile.gif I just think it's unlikely, because I feel like a little too much everything Ed does is explained as an asnwer on the new TGF.

Dude that shit is DEEP!

It's not about TGF cos he doesn't know who TGF are.

I honestly don't expect much lyrical substance from this album based on the last 3. Which once again is a crying shame for someone who penned such interesting stuff for so long.

I think the lyrics are awesome and his comment about Hebrews 11: 1 about Faith is even cooler. The video is cool!! I wish I saw more of Adam though!! eyebrow.gif

"The greatest of teachers won't hesitate to leave you there by yourself chained to fate."

That one line has 12 times more meaning and intrigue than this whole song.

anyone have the lyrics to zion? I've been listening to it, dirty water, lotus flower, and grace a lot and I have the lyrics for DWLF down (I think) but there are some in Zion that elude me.
Anyone?

also, my apologies if it's already posted somewhere and I missed it.
Thanks a bunch!

... as far as Ed's lyrics not being as "meaningful" or "creative" or "interesting" as they used to be... I think Ed's in a happier place for the last few years than he was through SS. I read an interview where he said that he was high out of his brain when he wrote SS (which explains a lot) and he said he couldn't necessarily explain what all of those songs were about. SS is one of my favorite albums ever, so not to take away from it, but some of it appears to be just ramblings of drug induced attempts at creativity. (I have tried my hand at such things (as I'm sure many of us have) and the first time I got high in college I wrote a poem called "the speculum" and the first line was something about how I was so far from reality, I feel so separated, like the speculum..." this was not in fact genius. It was marijuana. And I can't write poetry under any circumstance.)

Probably none of you needed that story, but I think it's funny. I tell that story as "kids don't do drugs" PSA when I am at work sometimes.

anyway, happy people creativity isn't celebrated the way angry/despairing/hopeless creativity is. Happy people creativity can be annoying because "dammit, why are you so happy"
I'm happy. so I like his new version of the world.
If I were miserable, I would long for SS 2.0

But it may have been one of the few poems about a ob/gyn instrument that has ever been written. laugh.gif

Kind of like the way people hate successful mainstream rock.

This isn't exactly true. I'm sure none of us hated Live in 1995 sarcasm.gif
