I saw this post in another thread:

QUOTE(Existentialist @ Jul 2 2008, 6:58 am) *

I agree. SOY is full of dumbass wannabe fans.

which leads me to the question, "What criteria does somebody have to meet in order for you to consider them a true Live fan?"

My list of minimum requirements would be:

- Has been to at least 5 concerts (at least one not at the nearest/most conveniet venue).
- Owns all of the bands albums (including Radiant Sea and Awake)
- Owns at least one physical bootleg (not a download)
- Has at least 1 song in their top 10 favorites that are not singles.

I may revise or alter this as I think about it.

uhh huh.gif

I think when people are making a list with criteria so you can call yourself a Live fan, it actually makes them wanna be fans ...

there aren't requirements for a real Live fan I guess

Fair enough. It's not about me though, I'm going off of a statement. Ex was calling people wanna be's, so I'm wondering what people consider to be a real fan of the band as opposed to a wanna be.

No fair on the attending at least 5 concerts thing!

I live in South Africa.

They have been here 3 times.

The first time, my nephew was being born at the same time the concert was on. And he already knows the words to tons of Live Songs!

I was at both concerts after that.

Some of us just don't have the opportunity.

Was ex really calling them wanna be fans, or dumb ass wanna be's? As in, they want to be dumb asses and can't even achieve that .. which is kinda contradictory, but whatever .. so is "I don't think.." either way, is that really what he meant?

I don't think it's up to anyone to say what a "true" live fan is, that's just a form of fan elitism which is moronic. For instance, if the 5 gig thing rings true, I've only seen Morrissey twice yet I think anyone that knows me would call me a Morrissey fan before saying I have black hair when they describe me. There are plenty of people around here as you know that are not fans of much Live has done post 2000 but I don't think that makes them any less of a "true" fan, to blindly love whatever a band puts out just seems stupid, if you legit love it well fair enough, but if you don't .... you don't. I've been listening to Live since I was about 7yrs old and seen them a number of times, I'd call myself a pretty big fan, and the fact I'm sticking it out to see if they can rectify their career rather than just throwing in the towel all together should say something at least.

Anyhoo..

I've always loved Live. But I forgot about them for a couple of years.

Then I went through a phase that sorta felt like the end of the world. I was bordering suicidal and basically had the whole thing planned. As a nurse it's easy to come up with pain free ways to die and end it all. I hate suicide attempt victims and usually want to bitch slap the asses who try it. Until I ended up there myself.

Anyway. I was basically going through all my stuff and deciding what was going to who and who would get what. When I found my Live stuff. And I put it into the player for old times sake.

I know this sounds corny and stupid but the words to TBD and then Run to the water.....the way Ed sang them with such conviction....I found myself sobbing on the floor like the world was done for. I fell asleep. And when I woke up....well.....I felt better.

I became readdicted to Live again and for a long time, I did nothing but listen to Live and I had a reason to live (pardon the pun).

Just after that I met my husband, got married, and had a child.

I still to this day adamantly say that Edward Kowalczyk's voice saved my life.

I think I'm a fan.

As for criteria....who gives a fuck?

You either like their music or you dont.

I don't know why you'd have to stand up in front of everyone and say I'm a fan coz I like them more than you do because.......

It's stupid.

Been a fan since '94. Used to be in the fan club thing, even won a prize in a contest. Have all the cds. Seen them only once for TDTH tour. (before I couldn't ever make it due to my age and travel)
After that, well, let's just say V and so on were released and I lost much of my interest to even bother seeing them again. Am I a fan? I would think so. Atleast a fan of the first 4 albums.
I too am waiting for another great Live album though I'm not holding my breath too hard. There's just so much great music out there to keep me satisfied.

Hoodie, why don't you think of a criteria that would suit someone else apart from you?

ok. Let my criterias begin.

A true Live fan shall have Chad Taylor's guitar pick.
A true Live fan has to have a rare VHS collectible from 1995
A true Live fan shall obtain a Live lighter.

What else?

I have not been to a single gig of theirs, but I have all the above-mentioned and have been listening to them for about 10 years already. Does this make me a fan?

Idiotic stuff.

A true fan will hardly ever scream about his fandom on every corner and make a list of criterias or "What to do".

It may well have become a nice and interesting thread if you have not sticked to a quote by Ex which is completely misunderstood by you.

The fandom is between your ears, inside your ears and inside your soul.

Nuff said.

PS Eamon, top stuff. As usual.

wtf's up with people putting hero of love in their top ten?? Ive seen people talking highly of that song before, i just dont get it. Im listening to it now and its still just a lame, boring, completely forgettable filler, with irritating falsetto!

Wow, I feel like I'm being grossly misinterpreted here. Again, this is nothing about me or justifying myself. I'm simply going off of the premise that if people can state that other people are "wanna be fans" of a band and other people agree then that indicates that there must be some criteria for being a true fan. I'm simply going off of someones quote for a topic idea.

For example, as a hypethetical scenario, if someone you meet tells you that they just heard of the band, owned SFBM, and called themselves a huge fan too what would you think?

This is just an idea to start discussion. Seriously, what really seperates a person considered a casual fan from a person who is a true fan of Live. I felt the things I put were pretty generic, like owning the albums and going to shows, to start discussion. It doesn't mean they are right or wrong.

"An idea". I am expecting if you've got anything else to say.
