That's really not a very diverse collection, to be honest. Though a list of that length proves diversity or lack of it much more than a 10 band list. It's very easy to choose 10 very different cds from a collection, and use them to proclaim your tastes are varied... without the whole picture though, it's pretty meaningless.

You have to remember that I am old. I graduated from high school forty years ago, the same year that Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors and others released their first album. So there are many old favourites. But I have always loved new music as well. I like lyrics that mean something and inventive music, plus great musicianship.

My collection of music reaches across much broader genres, but these are my favourites:

Really Old Artists

Rush
Pink Floyd
Grateful Dead
The Moody Blues
Jefferson Airplane
Yes
Jimi Hendrix
Van Morrison

Old Artists

LiVE
Laurie Anderson
Peter Gabriel
Seal
Tears For Fears
Kate Bush
Pearl Jam
Collective Soul

New Artists

The Mars Volta
Riverside

Classical

Bela Bartok
Claude Debussy
Maurice Ravel
Dimitri Shostakovich
Samuel Barber

This is a fun thread.

My favorites:

Older bands:

Led Zeppelin
Van Morrison
Steely Dan
Queen
Jimi Hendrix
Allman Brothers Band (although they are still around)
Three Dog Night (has anyone here ever actually heard of them?)
AC/DC (yeah they aren't the greatest band ever but they can sure rock)

90's alternative:

Soundgarden
Live
Collective Soul
Rage Against the Machine
Better Than Ezra
Counting Crows
Sublime

Current rock:

Shinedown
Silvertide
Incubus (their older stuff)
Our Lady Peace
Ours
Dave Mathews Band
Sister Hazel
Tantric

Singer-songwriters:

Ryan Adams
Damien Rice
Ray Lamontagne
Jeff Buckley
Josh Kelley
Jack Johnson

I hate pop. Can't really think of any pop artist that would make my list unless you count the new Collective Soul song. lol.gif

I don't own any country cds but I'm not adverse to listeing to it. One of my favorite artists, Ryan Adams is considered Alt Country so I guess that's as close as I'll get to that genre. Although I do enjoy Keith Urban's stuff.

I do like funk, I'm not ashamed to admit it. Earth Wind and Fire, Kool and the Gang and newer stuff with a funky vibe like G Love.
I also enjoyed the 80's hairbands just like Tina. Hey, I grew up in the 80's it was fun music back then. And a little heavy metal too, Judas Priest was once my favorite band along with Iron Maiden and I used to really dig Metallica.

R and B really isn't my thing but that is probably because I'm not really exposed to it much these days. I like the old school stuff like Otis Redding and Marvin Gaye though.

And my guilty pleasure is Jimmy Buffet. LOVE his music.

It's funny though when I think about it. I used to love SO many different bands and they have all either gone away or just started sucking. It almost seems like I hardly have any favorites anymore. I think my favorite genre right now is the singer/songwriter one. I hear a new song that I like on my Sirius radio almost every day by a singer/songwriter. I haven't had a chance to buy many of their cds but I'm working on it. I also find that I really enjoy a lot of Indie bands. I think that may be the best place to find really great music these days and there are so many bands out there to hear!
