ASSJN1279, you should read the whole thread again, not with only one eye and with the other on ED's Head.

+LIVE+ themself said in their interview that they want to protect the new material, and right they are, as snippets of material of last night show already slipped onto the internet.

Taylor said Live is working on new material, but in an effort to keep any new tunes off YouTube, the band stuck to its hits Monday.

This is from the following Interview, READ IT: http://www.ydr.com/living/ci_20157079/lives-new-lead-singer

Protect them from what? If a new song is good, why not let fans hear it performed on youtube?

If there was ever a time to not play all the hits, it was a hometown show filled with family members and invitation only fans. LIVE 2.0 is no different from Journey, Foreigner, or any other legacy act with a new singer. Pokey's double standard is alive and well.

No.

Our issue with Ed isn't that he plays the hits.

It's because Ed publicly says the following (paraphrased)

"I'm wanting to branch out and do my solo thang, I'm tired of the same creative process and I want to focus on this new direction."

then he turns around and plays a set list full of the legacy hits.

For Live2.0, it's not the same because

A) Live2.0 has never said that they want to branch out and do different things. (Save for the plexiglass thing, which they've rectified)

B) They haven't released new material and clearly stated that they wanted to keep the new material under lock for the time being.

I hope, for your sake, that you're not so daft as to truly need this explanation.

Ed does sometimes read lyrics when he covers other people's songs.

I don't know if you knew or not but Shinn is now IN Live. He has every right to sing every Live song and to put his own twist on it and make it his own. The owners of Live gave him that right.

Ed is not IN Live. He is now the one singing covers. Those songs aren't his. They are property of Live.

But, it is okay for Ed to stare down a lyric sheet on a new song but Shinn can't. Weren't you talking about double standards earlier?

Because they don't want to?

Maybe the album isn't as far along and if they leak songs it could be some time before the album comes out and any momentum is lost? Maybe the new material isn't as polished yet?

Why concern yourself with it? Doesn't Ed have new material you can cry about being released on YouTube? Or is Ed just waiting for Live to release something so he can add it to his set list too?

Mistakes are going to happen early on, and the nerves were big last night. My only gripe was the lack of material from MJ.

That was one of the first things I said to Rupe. I imagine this will be remedied quickly but I was pretty surprised.

And yes getting home at 4 AM and getting up for work SUCKS.

I'm sure they will once they start touring, and once it's released, all signs point so far to an open taping policy. But in their VERY FIRST show which is just a rehearsal they decided not to give everything away up front. For someone who demands so fucking little of Ed, an artist you like, you sure are wanting a lot to happen for Live. I'm sure the ulterior motive though for you is to wish they did do a new song so you could go on and on about how you don't like it.

You still haven't answered my questions, nice dodging political son, don't want to admit that you have no reason to still be here? You sure are putting a lot of time and effort into a band that you don't like Nick.

And here's the thing, you can't appreciate the music, the guitar, the bass, the drums, you don't understand that, you identify with voice and lyrics. You are still getting that, what you love, what drew you in is STILL OUT THERE. What you're really arguing over now is a name, do you not see how utterly petty and childish that seems? Your entire basis for this entire thing is the name, you said you didn't even mind CCP and a new singer playing Live songs so long as they didn't call themselves Live, so when it boils down to it, you don't care about the music in one more way!
It blows my mind that you can't let this go and screams of obsessive issues, dude, the pleasure you get is the music, do you think Ed cares about how much money you make? Why worry about him like that, music is what we should be concerned with, you have what you want, and we have what we want, we should be able to just go our separate ways now. FORGET THE NAME, the name belongs to CCP, they can do with it as they please, drop it.

Especially in a "dress rehearsal". Definitely some uncomfortable moments, but Shinn marched on.

He wrote the lyrics to all of LIVE's catalog and a good chunk of the music. They are his songs as much as they are CCPs.

Chad Taylor has stated many times that he doesn't want LIVE to become a legacy act. The setlist last night was clearly that of a legacy act(with a cover singer to boot).

There are a lot of great cover singers out there. Last night he sang 11 songs that he had no part in creating. How is he not a cover singer?

I need a sick high quality photo from last night's show to use with my article, anyone got one that is available?

Also, I'll post a more fan-ey review later but I did want you guys to read this before it goes up on the webz. There may be some typos or factual problems (I wrote this last night at 3 AM), so if you see anything let me know!

---------------------------------------------
A wise person once told me - “You know you are old when you live to see one of your favorite bands change lead singers.” They were right – I do feel old – but I am also ecstatic, and I’m not the only one. The 1,200 people gathered at the Strand in Live’s hometown of York, Pennsylvania were just as thrilled as I was to welcome Chris Shinn to the front man position that was made vacant when singer Ed Kowalczyk split for a solo career in 2008.

The show was a homecoming “tour dress rehearsal” for the three very original members of Live, guitarist Chad Taylor, drummer Chad Gracey, and bassist Patrick Dahlheimer - who put York on the map in the mid ‘90s with a string of radio hits including the eternal “Lightning Crashes.” It also felt like a homecoming for Chris Shinn as well. Shinn has been around a long time, working with past and present members of groups like Blind Melon and Pearl Jam, but he has never found a place to really shine. The music business is tough, and Chris has been on the verge of breaking wide open since his career started. He has found a home in Live and their city.

Let me not be remiss – when I say homecoming I mean it. I met the bass player’s mother for goodness sakes (she is so sweet!). What set this homecoming apart is how Chad, Chad, and Patrick are giving back to their community. Let me be blunt – York, PA has fallen on hard times. The band even wrote several songs about that very subject on their multi-platinum smash Throwing Copper. But rather than abandon the town in the wake of their fame, the guys have decided to invest in it – literally. They are working to bring business to York in the form of building renovations and working with musicians who are trying to make it just like they did. It’s no small feat, but that makes the work all the more admirable. You know you are doing something right when the mayor comes out to a rock show just to thank you.

Despite the apparent good the band hopes to do for its town, the announcement of a new lead singer won’t arrive without controversy in the communities who still follow Live. The departure of Ed Kowalczyk was controversial at best, but there was an air of sincerity that was unprecedented in such an event. “There’s no bad blood” said a clearly humbled Chris Shinn before one of the final songs, “I’m so blessed to be here.” It was a very real moment in the midst of a show that featured more rock bravado than you could shake a Les Paul at.

Speaking of the show, Live’s revamped sound (potentially) features a little synth and drum loops and the guitar stylings of Sean Hennesy (Candlebox, The Gracious Few), along with the brand new vocals. It’s a risky move, but one that went a long way to make the show not feel like “Live and their new lead singer.” It felt new, it felt fresh, and by the way, the band’s biggest songs and their deepest back catalogue are very, very safe in the hands of Chris Shinn. For a band of guys hovering around their forties (with the exception of the two possible new members) the show was extremely aggressive and energetic, channeling the spirit of hits like “I Alone” and “All Over You” as if they were in their twenties again. It was a sight to behold and one any rock fan could appreciate.

The only thing I can’t answer for are what the new Live songs will be like. What made Live unique was the collaboration of the four band members and the deep, and often dark, spirituality of the lyrics. Even though the band’s more recent releases lacked the depth that made them famous, Live always had a lot to say about the world. So with its core lyrical voice touring as a solo Christian artist, it will be interesting to see where the band ends up lyrically, but if last night’s show is any indication the band is most assuredly back on their feet creatively.

All that speculation will have to wait for another day - what we know now is that the band millions fell in love with in the ‘90s is back with a new voice and a desire to give back to the people who helped them along the way. In an industry where greed, sexuality, and drug abuse often steal headlines, it is a true inspiration to see someone do something different.

Good show, guys, good show.
