Oh man I can't wait for some new Live music, some old Live music and some shows. This may sound pathetic, but I swear to you, my whole life is going to get happier when this stuff starts to happen. Nothing beats the excitement of the days and moments leading up to a Live concert, the first of three concsecutive nights within a 120 mile radius of my house, culminating in that moment, when your feet already hurt and your ears are already ringing from the amateur opening act, when Matt Gracey leaves the stage and the Audioslave cd gets piped down, the lights go down, the spot lights go up, the smoke pours onto the stage and Chad Gracey walks out and climbs into his drum kit and Patrick and Chad pull their guitar straps over their heads. Then the intro of the opening song starts. I raise my camera up to my eye and get ready for an audio and visual explosion!!! MY GOD I get chills just thinking about it now! Oh yeah, baby! Bring it on! I am a Live Freak from head to toe, down to the bone!

Ed and Adam seem to be conviently left out of that description of a LIVE show(Audioslave CD era).

Piss off you wanker.

I'll give you the description of Ed and Adam. Also, know full well that I don't have a problem with Adam at all. I've met him before and he's a cool guy. Unfortunately, his arrival as a touring guitarist allowed Ed to put down his guitar and cultivate that douche bag stage presence.

"Just then Adam walked on stage and picked up his guitar. I couldn't really see him because he was off to the side in the dark, but I did see him arrive. Then casually late, Ed saunters onto the stage. He's walking oddly, and seems to be pelvic thrusting the ladies in the front row. It is somewhat of a disappointment to see him act this way, because he looks like an idiot. He walks up to the microphone stand and rubs his hands all over his chest and crotch, while thrusting to the same ladies in the front row. I'm disgusted by this, but quickly forget about that display when he begins to whine with that falsetto of his. Thankfully, Chad's guitar is loud and drowns out the falsetto."

It's no conspiracy. No ulterior motive. I was simply commenting on the exciting build-up to a Live show. Ed doesn't come out on stage until after CCP start playing the song and he comes running out onto the stage just as his vocals are supposed to start, wearing sunglasses that he doesn't take off until after the first three songs (which happens to to unfortunately correspond to the first three songs that a person with a photo pass is aloud to shoot, so I never get a good photo of his face unless someone with connections lets me shoot later in the show). By the time Ed appears, it is no longer anticipation. The show has already started. Also, I was trying to tie in the excitement leading up to a Live show with the excitement I will soon feel when there are new Live shows, and Ed won't be there.

Neither will the Audioslave CD, most likely.

2006 Live concert review by a very well respected music blogger

READ HERE

cite "I found Ed to be a distraction from the music, ESPECIALLY at the end when he actually removed his fitted tank top and performed the last song and both encores shirtless, often while thrusting his crotch in my general direction.

Yeah, that’s what I’m talkin’ about. My sister made the observation that his nipples were tiny, and looked like they were drawn on with a felt tip marker. So then I just couldn’t stop looking at them and it was just all bad. Bad, bad, I tell you.

But the music itself was stellar. "

My wife is a Live outsider. She knows I am obsessed, but she's not that into it. Her comment, when I said that they are going on without Ed, was "It's not Live without Ed.". I sort of agree with that. It will be the sprit of Live. It will be the music of Live. It will be the nucleus of Live. But it won't be "Live".

Live isn't Apple computer. Steve Jobs resigned as CEO of Apple and Tim Cook succeeded him, and Apple will go on with a successor CEO. But Live, from Mental Jewelry to The Distance To Here, was a creative masterpiece. It was what it was. And you can't pretend that a new invention of it, with a new lead singer, will be what it was. The Mona Lisa is a masterpiece because it all just magically works together. She isn't particularly attractive. That smile is not the happiest smile. But there is something uniquely distinctive and beautiful about the painting that makes it a masterpiece and if you remove any material element from it, it won't be the Mona Lisa anymore. That goes for Ed and Chad and Chad and Patrick. This, by the way, is what Nick doesn't get about classic Live. It wasn't all Ed. Every nuance. Every note. Every influence. It all comes together to make a perfect masterpiece and it requires all the contributions to achieve that result. If classic Live was the Mona Lisa, then new Live will be a new painting. Will it be a masterpiece? Let's see. But with 15 years of growth and experience seperating CCP from the early works of Live, and a new singer, and a new songwriting process, it won't be a clone of classic Live.

What you call it is just semantics. Labels. You can call two different things by the same name - "Live" - but that doesn't make them the same thing. I think everybody gets that, although some of us who resist new Live perhaps are having a hard time getting their heads around the idea.

Anyone who argues that classic Live was what it was not only because of Ed, but also because of CCP, cannot also argue that new Live with a new lead singer will be the same "Live" we saw in the 90's. And I don't think that they are arguing that or will argue that. Yes, it is legally called Live becaause CCP can go on with the name. But they won't be going on like Apple is going on. Because this is music. Art. They will be going on with the name, but it will be a different band under the same name.

Speaking for myself, I am really, really excited to see what new Live can do. It sounds like we are going to hear some deeper cuts from the old albums. More rocking material. And a renewed energy and participation from CCP. I am totally excited about that. It doesn't erase what Live was in the 90's and it doesn't replace it. That will always stand as a monument to the achievement that those four great individuals created. Now let's see what kind of monumental achievement 3 of those 4 original band members make under the banner "Live" in 2011.

Smarter than CCP huh? Pretty sure the only people's views on this that are the "right" views so to speak, are the people in the band.

Dude, seriously, get the fuck over it, and move on.

Time will tell on Apple. A big component of Apple's success was beyond the mere functionality of their computers and chartered into an artistic or design oriented space. Buying an Apple product is about much more than buying a computer or phone, you're part of a movement, a community. Same as going to Starbucks is about more than buying a coffee. Same as being a Live fan is about more than just the music. There is an experience that comes with these entities that is much bigger than the components or actual products, or music in this case. As long as that experience resonates in the same fashion, even if there are changes, it doesn't matter. To the fans that experienced Live on a spiritual level, new Live does not have to sound the same as 90's Live. To the fans that only heard Ed singing, new Live might not hit them the same way. Kind of like Alice in Chains. The fans that only associated AIC with Layne had a hard time accepting the new singer. Those that experienced AIC on a much broader level were treated to new music that really carried on the spirit of AIC. It's up to the fans to decide. Some won't be open minded enough and that's fine. They can go listen to Eddie K and pretend that they are reliving the 90's with his current band. Those with broader minds will realize the spirit of Live does not exist with that incarnation and will at least give C,C,P a chance to tap into that spiritual territory before making up their minds.
