The ballad Drink (Everlasting Love) is another strong tune that would fit neatly on Live’s breakthrough CD Throwing Copper.

QUOTE
Groovy Old Men
July 28, 2010

Only about five years ago, I was finally introduced to the un-Googlable 90s band Live, being told by my cousin that they were “the poor man’s U2.” I devoured the records he let me borrow, quickly becoming a huge fan of several tracks like “I Alone,” “Run To the Water,” “Dance With You,” and “Overcome.” This summer, 39-year-old singer Ed Kowalczyk returns with his first solo album Alive.

Still nurturing his post-grunge prophetic purrs and growls, Kowalczyk comes hungry for and offering spiritual food. In the opening track “Drive,” narrator admits he’s “thirsty for something more than the whiskey that had become my water” and needs God to take the wheel of his life and drive. The entire record explores that “something more” that the mature and middle-aged seeker requires to further his spiritual evolution. Kowalczyk glows with gratitude for his children on “In Your Light,” grows past shattered delusions on “Soul Whispers” and generally gives us a daily devotional disc clothed in radio rock riffs.

While I’m far from done following blogs and tuning into the best new songs by artists now young enough to be my own kids (heck, my daughter’s 16 and will be kicking it hard at the Southern Girls Rock and Roll Camp this weekend), I sure like what’s getting laid down by some groovy old men. –Andrew William Smith, Editor

You can download the DVD from Ed's site, Hoodie.

I love the Great Beyond too!

I don't want the DVD, just the audio for my IPod.

Nick doesn't want you hearing it without Ed getting money.

No offense, but is that a bad thing? Granted, Ed likely isn't hurting for money, but the reason for putting out cd's is to make money and, hopefully, continued success in the music world, right? Satisfaction in being able to continue sharing one's music/talents/ideals should be a priority, but without continued success, the opportunity to share one's craft dries up. The more sales/downloads, the likelihood that future cd backings by labels, etc.

Huh. Never thought I'd see Interference post something about Ed Kowalczyk. Considering it's a U2 site and all.

I'm all for buying music that I think is truely worth the complete product, I buy loads of music. But for what Hoodie wants, just the audio rather than the whole DVD to watch it aint gonna hurt anyone in this case. Like you say Ed wouldn't be hurting for money so it just sucks when people jump up and down in a hissy fit (not saying you are, or Nick ... yet) over the whole ethical side of things. Just accept that he wants it, doesn't want to pay for it, either help him out or ignore it. I personally also wouldn't mind hearing the audio rip of the acoustic Zion, everything else I could do without. Certainly not downloading and paying for the whole DVD for one song which I only want the audio from.
I think if you really want the whole package and you think you'll get much joy out of watching it, then go ahead and buy it. If you aren't of that mind frame then getting it for free would be best.
Just like if Nick wanted to hear the TGF album I wouldn't begrudge him one bit for downloading it for free to hear it whilst I would buy it. I know he's not a massive fan and probably wouldn't end up having what he thought was worth his money so eh..

He didn't put it out on CD. These songs aren't even availible in his acoustic show downloads. I just want to hear the songs. Don't care to watch the DVD or get the interviews. Would just like to hear the music, which I'd probably only listen to once anyway.

This review is a bit negative:

Ed Kowalczyk - 'Alive' Review
Former Live Frontman Ed Kowalczyk Drowns in Cliches

Live frontman Ed Kowalczyk steps out with his first solo album, Alive, a record that features most of the hallmarks of his old band without the undeniable hooks that helped propel that post-grunge group in the 1990s. Filled with lumbering, spiritual-themed songs, Alive is so unremittingly bombastic that it’s almost charming, but anyone who isn’t already a sucker for Live’s pseudo-uplifting songs will easily resist Kowalczyk’s barrel-chested fervor.

Is It Live or Is It Ed Kowalczyk?

Live came to prominence in the mid-‘90s thanks to albums like Throwing Copper and Secret Samadhi, which were chock full of anthem-ready tunes that merged the earnestness of Pearl Jam with the plaintive vocals of U2 or R.E.M. Though heavily formulaic, Live had their moments, but the group’s commercial standing soon tumbled once the wave of post-Nirvana bands began to lose their novelty. Live effectively broke up at the end of last year, prompting Kowalczyk to strike out on his own. Judging from Alive, Kowalczyk was Live’s heart and soul, although that’s meant as a bit of a backhanded compliment. Indeed, Alive very much sounds like a Live album, but that doesn’t mean it’s a particularly good album.

Spiritually Lacking

Kowalczyk has often featured spiritual messages in his songs, drawing on Buddhism and Christianity when singing about the need for some sort of faith in an uncertain world. But Alive is so relentless in its metaphorical content that it feels like a crutch. Whether it’s allusions to “water and wine” in “Just in Time,” the search for personal salvation in “Zion,” or the salute to a higher power in “Grace,” Alive bristles with sanctimony. Great artists from Johnny Cash to Bono have made great music about their spiritual struggles, but Kowalczyk can’t seem to express himself without resorting to cliches that fail to dramatize his personal journey of faith.

Post-Post-Grunge

On a musical level, Alive has a deadening familiarity for anyone who remembers Live hits like “Lightning Crashes.” Surging choruses, revved-up guitars, bellowed vocals – Kowalczyk milked this style for years with his old band, but what’s ironic is that now it’s been adopted by current bands like Daughtry that have given it more juice. By comparison, Alive feels perfunctory, which is especially deadly when your stock in trade is inspirational songs that are meant to lift the spirit.

A Few Bright Spots

Only two Alive tracks break free of the album’s dull stupor. “Drive” follows the Live formula to perfection, offering slowly building verses and arena-sized choruses. And “Drink (Everlasting Love)” is a ballad with a pretty melody, although it has a typically inane lyric about a wonderful woman who “makes the Mona Lisa smile.” But on the whole, if you’re really craving some Live, skip Alive and just go to their greatest-hits collection, which is called Awake. The titles are pretty similar, but in terms of sheer listenability, the two albums couldn’t be more different.

'Alive' – Best Tracks:
“Drive”
“Drink - Everlasting Love"
“Grace”
“Stand”

Actually, I felt bad about putting that last review up. Wouldn't feel right not putting it there either, as I am one who believes all sides should be shared and discussed on any issue.

Personally I enjoy Alive a lot, so it pains me to put up something that tears it apart.

I have succeeded in listening to this album as well, I simply do my best and tend to forget that it is Ed. I consider it a nice light pop music, which goes well in the underground on my way to work. I get sad when Zion starts as I suddenly remember that it is Ed and there are no Chads or Pats playing around him. Not that I would listen to this kind of music if none of my favourite musicians had to do anything with it really

That takes guts, personally you like it but the reviews are lukewarm. I won't use the word scathing as that caused an uproar here a few weeks ago. I like a few of the tracks but the whole CD collectively was rushed out and is a bit blase. He's not reaching anything new and fresh. No matter who many times Ed tells us that he needed to break out and do something new, he's not very honest with that declaration. Like everything he's said the past 10 years....nonsense. CT said it nicely in his blog regarding (book chapter 13), CT: 'I don't want to go out this way'; Ed: "I have a plan". It was Uber fail from the days late 2000 on.
