He kinda did, he didn't understand Itchy's point and didn't see Lakini's Juice as a shot at Christianity like Operation Spirit was. I kind of agree with him. Lakini's Juice isn't as in your face as Operation Spirit was about it's views, but there are definite Christian undertones in it and not of the most favourable light, but I guess it's one of those songs that Ed could easily say is about something totally else. I believe even back in the SS days Ed was saying he wasn't sure of Lakini's Juice's exact meanings .. I liked that.

I caved and re-downloaded Alive again (you hear that Nick, I stole it TWICE, there is a special place reserved in hell for me next to Fritzl now!). I just wanted to see if my opinion improved or slid even further. I'll say for the most part it slid even further.

What the fuck is Soul Whispers even about? Like it's not even SS confusing, it just comes together like such a poorly written song, it's really bad, take back what I said about it being one of the better ones on the album .. same for Rome, love shines 2.0. The Great Beyond is still one of the worst things he's ever done but Just In Time is knocking on the door. My opinion improved of Drive a little annnd that's about it. Recycle Bin is beckoning again!

I've listened to live versions tons of times. Guess I just quit listening to what Ed was saying and enjoyed the sound.

It's ambiguous I think to the point where an argument could be built for and against why it is/isn't damning Christianity. Operation Spirit, there's no debate.

Granted, it's a bit more subtle than an outright shot, but it's hardly what I call positive imagery.

It's open to interpretation, both as a Christian reference and as slam at Christianity. Particularly the latter. It may draw from NT references, but it isn't necessarily in a negative way.

And if Nick or anyone else who doesn't agree isn't Catholic, does that make them "Christianity understanding impaired"?


I agree. It's a very ambigious point in the lyrics of LJ where the OS was direct.

You know, it's odd. I always considered the most damning part of Operation Spirit to be in the extended title (The Tyranny of Tradition).

Without the title, the rest of the song seems to be more about a man struggling with his faith and how it has failed him during a time of personal crisis. To anyone who has ever questioned during a time of tragedy or personal struggle, this song resonates deeply. I know it did for me.

It may not be outright negative, but it sure as hell isn't positive. And Ed's all about that positive vibe now. Or so we keep getting reminded.

He may not have noticed, but the rest of us did.

And yes, it totally fucks the song up. Don't believe me? Let's try this. Change the lyrics to Lightning Crashes so that instead of going from life to death to life, we now go from death to life to death. Tell me that doesn't change the song from uplifting to depressing.

Ed's lyrical change, beyond being bad, turns the song on its head.

I agree; changing the lyrics to OS is one of the shittest things he's ever done.
