That is the dumbest thinking I've seen on here in a while! At this point I hope he just posts anything. Thanks Badman!

I obviously enjoy the site, look at my accumulation of posts and how long I've been here!

Keep up the good work Nick and Dangum!

I know it's been two years, but.... I have it! I haven't been around lately, so I don't know if this been made available to Live fans yet though?

I would love to listen to it. That would be fantastic!

Also, if you have any other gems they would all be appreciated!

I heard we can lure him back with sub sandwiches... they are his one weakness. Let's just put one under a box held up by a stick and a string and wait until he falls for it.

Oh crap... he can read this... uhoh.gif

I went to high school with the guy that sold that tape on ebay a few years ago. I remembered hearing about this tape way, way back and was always intrigued by it. I figured it would basically be like DoaD sounding versions of the Mental Jewelry tracks....which is a good thing. I love the almost but not quite crunchiness of the DoaD Good Pain intro.

I always figured they were holding these tracks back to include with an official version of DoaD. It would go well together and give fans even more of a reason to buy it.

Although it's extremely unlikely the band will get back together (but never say never) I still hope they're $mart enough to release an official DoaD CD, mid 90's era concert album and a full length B-sides album....we can always dream......

Could you confirm with your high school classmate whether he had recorded mp3's of the tape and if he would be willing to share with you?

I haven't talked to the guy since high school so it's not something I would actively pursue.

It is weird that these tracks haven't gotten out there, but the tape was far rarer then DoaD.

Here is the text from that ebay auction:

QUOTE
"Divided Mind, Divided Planet" (1990) - Public Affection (original name of LIVE)

Pain Lies on the Riverside, Bothers Unaware, Waterboy, Operation Spirit, Peace is Now

This tape is a five song demo recorded by the band Public Affection in 1990 before they changed their name to LIVE. The tape was produced by Jay Healy. The copyright is 1990; The tape states "All songs written and preformed by public affection." Versions of these songs would appear on the LIVE album, "Mental Jewelry." This tape offers a unique opportunity to see the progression of this band as they moved from their public affection / "the death of a dictionary" period into the LIVE "Mental Jewelry period.

Public Affection distributed the tape to fans who requested copies of it through the mail. The distrubution of the tape is discribed by the Public Affection newsletter, "Black Coffee," which states the following:

"A few months ago Public Affection recorded a five song demo with Producer/Engineer Jay Healy. By contract we are not allowed to sell "Divided Mind, Divided Planet", however we may give it away.

"If you wish to help wake up the world send a blank tape and a check for two dollars (to cover postage) and we will make a copy of "Divided Mind, Divided Planet" for you. Go ahead and make copies for you friends, we need all the help we can get." (See images for this quote)

The tape offered here is an orignal copy made by the band. The insert contains the lyrics for the songs, as well as information about the management of Public Affection. The insert has also been autographed by Ed Kowalczyk (vocals - as ed.), Chad Taylor (guitar) and Chad Gracey (drums). The tape was signed at a CD signing for Mental Jewelry in Lancaster, PA at the now defunct BBC Records. The dedication is to "Larry."

To prove the legitimacy of this item, The tape comes with the copy of the Public Affection newsletter, called "Black Coffee," which describes this tape. This newsletter, and others like it, were distrubuted at Public Affection shows and through the band's mailing list. Any LIVE collector would want this Newletter alone. The tape and the Newsletter together are truly a unique find.

I recently sold the autographed Death of a Dictionary on Ebay (290118795386)

I'm pretty sure Dan does not possess the recordings from DMDP. Unless my memory is failing me (which is entirely possible due to old age), Dan was not the one who bought the ONLY known cassette on auction of this release. I almost laid down $2,000 on this tape back in 2007 but restrained myself because other matters were more prominent in my life at the time. In fact, DMDP is partly why I stopped collecting in the first place. I used to buy anything and everything, no matter what dollar, and my collection flourished because of that mentality. Only when I stood back for a second and looked at my options did I second guess myself. I could have easily won this cassette in the auction. Nobody would have thrown $2,000 on it, except me. But, I consciously ignored the auction and allowed someone else to gain possession of the tape. Knowing that this was something I might not encounter for another 15-20 years, I decided right then and there that my collecting days were over.

The tape that sold in 2007 is the only recognized existence of this recording. The tape was not printed in a certain quantity. It was produced on demand. If you sent the Public Affection fanclub a Maxell cassette and $2, they would make a copy of this for you. That's all. Its rarity is entirely based on how many people sent in their blank tape and $2.
