QUOTE(PurdueSteve @ Mar 30 2009, 5:28 am) *

If anyone gets this done soon, convert to MP3 and throw it up on MediaFire [or other]. I won't have a chance to download the torrent and covert for a few days as I'm away from my home PC with the software and I really wanna take a listen here.

I prefer that people keep MP3s for personal use and not distribute them since there is a lossless source available, see my show notes in the original post. But, I can't stop you, it's just my preference.

QUOTE(PurdueSteve @ Mar 30 2009, 8:16 am) *

In the comments section of the Dime link, someone mentioned having had recorded other recent shows, including Ed's Solo Acoustic in NYC, does anyone have that?

The NYC and Sayreville taper says that he will post his recordings on Dime soon.

QUOTE(Hoodstock @ Mar 30 2009, 6:50 pm) *

Ditto - My account expired and I could never figure out how to convert them anyway

Dime has a robot that deletes inactive accounts on a daily basis and opens up new logins everyday, just keep trying.

If someone knows of another torrent tacker that does not require logins for the seeders and leechers, please let me know, I can seed it there.

Brian,

I'm an electronics engineer and a home theater hobbyist. I have a theoretical understanding of digital compression and analog signal transmission.

I know the loss less formats are obviously inherently better than lossy formats, but why do you believe that potential loss is within the realm of these types of recordings? I was able to grab the torrent, and playing back the FLAC and MP3 on my high end audio rig in both 2 channel discrete and 7-channel matrix, I cannot discern a difference. The quality of the recording itself, in nature, cannot compare with a studio or soundboard recording. I'm not complaining about these types of recordings because it's our only access to this material, I'm just curious why the worry about MP3s being spread when it appears that the fidelity loss is moot.

-Steve

Thats one things I don't understand ... I mean absolutely many thanks as always to someone who can record good quality shows to share .. but not wanting people to distrubute "lossy" mp3 versions of them? Why not? Why do people care what quality it is listend to in ... flac whilst yes technically a better quality, is a large file and a pain to play, especially on mp3 players.
It doesn't concern me so much, I have plenty of downloads to get larger files and know how to change them into mp3, but not everyone does and if no one uploads the smaller files for them then those people miss out. It always to me just sort of comes across as being ..well, arrogant isn't the word .. ellitest in a way maybe? I know that's not always the intention but its always something that's baffled me. And like I say, I fully appreciate people getting recordings out to us, but when people start calling them "my recording" and get quite possessive of it like somehow they have legal rights to it or something is strange ... I just know if I had the ability to record a show it'd go online with absolutely no requests other than to simply "enjoy".

Anyways .. this isn't a personal attack, more just wondering outloud.

This is true.

Even in a studio recording, most human ears won't be able to tell the difference between a lossless file and an mp3 of around 192kbps or higher. I certainly can't, and I've definitely become more aware of these things over the years. Mp3 (especially with the current version of the LAME encoder) have come a long way.

I simply do not have the time to figure this out (http://www.simplehelp.net/2006/08/14/how-to-convert-flac-files-to-mp3-using-windows/) and convert flac to mp3. If anyone has already done it, and can post it or pm me, I would greatly appreciate it.

Try using dBpoweramp. It's 1 program that will covert the FLAC to MP3. Very easy to use.
Instructions (inc. screen shots) can be found here.
http://www.dbpoweramp.com/dmc.htm
Download link can be found here.
http://www.dbpoweramp.com/download.htm
Choose "Download: dBpoweramp Music Converter R13.2 5.3 MB"

Seriously, try it. It's not time consuming. If you can't figure it out by reading the 1 page of instructions, you probably should return your computer to BestBuy or wherever you got it from.

Another way to convert FLACs to MP3 is to just "right click" on a FLAC file and then choose ("Convert to") (Note: you need to have installed the dBpoweramp program to do this)

Also, the Sophia in this show is the best version I have ever heard. It is unlike anything I have heard out of this band and it is a good direction.
