I'll agree with you on the Pumpkins and the Peppers, but not Incubus, that last album was far weaker than Morning View, it was a total step back.

QUOTE(LiveRoCkS77 @ Mar 19 2006, 2:01 pm) *

I'd really like a list of bands you know of in the modern era that have progressively made better music. I'd just love to hear that list and the reasoning behind it.

Because the trend nowadays seems to be different then it was way back when. Very, VERY few bands live up to their original billing. Just look at some of the bands out there...... Metallica has lipped tremendously from where they were. U2, although still popular, are nowhere near what they used to be....probably one of the biggest slides of them all if you ask me. I mean, this How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb? I've listened to it several times now and will probably never again.

Pearl Jam.......hmmmmmm, the list is growing. They have dumped since Ten and Vs. Lets go on, how about Radiohead? They make masterpieces like they did and theat turns into Pablo Honey and Hail To The Thief? Major Slide......The same can be said for 95% of music acts over the past 20 years. REM, The Chili Peppers......the list goes on and on

Bands that have improved with time? Tool, King Crimson, Tortoise, Coil, Pineapple Thief, Pelican, Fantomas, Explosions in the Sky, NIN (though with teeth was a departure from that trend), Porcupine Tree, Sun O))), Secret Chiefs 3, The Tin Hat Trio...would you like me to go on?

QUOTE(andthelettuce @ Mar 19 2006, 3:58 pm) *

I don't think it's wrong to want to listen to music that exposes you to new ideas, but compared to truly remarkable ideas, I have never heard one song that I've found to be significantly insightful. I never said people who listen to music solely for insight are looking in the wrong place because insight can be found in other places; I said it because I believe the insight offered by music is insignificant compared to other sources. However, I believe the enjoyment offered by music is not insignificant compared to other sources.

I feel that, but still, you can use music (which has an enjoyment factor) to introduce you to ideas, and then look into them more on your own. That's happened to me plenty of times. It's not about looking to music as your sole source of gaining intellect, it's about appreciating musicians that incorporate worthwhile ideas into their music.

QUOTE(FishOutaWater @ Mar 19 2006, 5:34 pm) *

Hey, I'm just responding to your request. You said "Where the hell do you see any of that in the lyrics to the river? Please, do explain. I'd hate to think your comments here are nothing more than unfounded conjecture." So I explained where I see that in the lyrics. So your
response is "who cares". Well, you asked.

Well, I do appreciate your explanation, but it isn't exactly satisfactory. I asked where in the lyrics you saw all that shit you talked about, and you cited a bunch of stuff Ed has said in interviews and shit like that.

QUOTE(FishOutaWater @ Mar 19 2006, 5:34 pm) *

Maybe if you understood Ed's lyrics better you wouldn't think they suck as much as you seem to.

This has nothing to do with it. The lyrics are bland and uncreative, regardless of what topics they might deal with. As I said before, your explanation adds a little credibility to the song, but does nothing to effect the quality of the writing.

I agree with pheezy (yeah, I know, scary wink.gif )

It's a shame when obviously talented songwriters have to resort to ordinary lyrics (and I dont mean that in a bad way)

often a lyric can put you in a certain mood, or brings you back wonderfull memories... a mediocre lyric rarely does that for me, I hate to admit it, but it's true.

Ed's writing for his kids now, so he has to use basic phrases to get across the deep meanings ... (laughs)

Was talking about mainstream bands, not that you're bright enough to notice. Every single band I mentioned was just that. No pressure on these little known indie bands who don't have anything to live up or be compared to.

Chili Peppers regressed huge agter Blood Sugar Sex Magic or whatever the fuck it was called....and Incubus? LMAO, that's hilarious.

The pumpkins are one of very few that progressed as they went on.

What the fuck are you talking about? How can you even make a post like this without feeling like a fucking moron? Bands that aren't part of the mainstream don't feel pressure from their fans and critics? Little known artists don't put pressure on themselves to improve? Seriously, what the hell are you talking about?

Goddammit. You asked for bands that have improved with time and I gave you a list of them. You are right that most mainstreams bands suck more and more as time goes on, but all that proves is the effect of popularity.

Why is it wrong to expect bands do improve over time? I don't give a fuck if you're fucking popular or not, improvement should constantly be a goal.

And liverocks, what the fuck? Pablo Honey was radiohead's FIRST album you fucking plonker. And HTTT is a fantastic album. It's not OKC, but it's still great.

Coil is awesome. Musick to Play in the Dark I is fucking awesome. If you can, check out that album, specifically "Are You Shivering?" and "Red Birds Will Fly Out of the East and Destroy Paris in a Night".
