QUOTE(Pokey @ Mar 19 2006, 1:15 am) *

Sofia seems to suffer from what Life Marches On suffered from .. remember when we got our first listen of that song in late 2002 it sounded pretty good .. the guitars were really rip-roaring and it wild. The studio version was just toned down completely .. the guitar was just sounded like the same bit looped over and over, the little guitar "solo" in it was exactly the same as the verses yet the only difference was Ed wasn't singing .. in that early live version it had a much different sound.

The early live versions of Sofia seemed to have a much more aggressive guitar part, not only that but it sounded more like Taylor was just jamming and possibly every time he played it it'd sound slightly different, there were groovy little bits all over the place .. the studio version again seems toned down and like it's just been looped .. it'd just be nicer to have that guitar sound a little less "perfected" or something.

Hehehe, something we agree upon. Couldn't agree more actually. It seems most of what is raw and makes the song rock somewhat gets smoothed over into some overproduced, simple pop guitar medley that just stinks. You're right, Life marches on was a great example and I see what you mean here too.

Again, opinion, but I cannot understand the opinion that half of MJ is filler. Let's try and define filler here: basic, unimaginative songs and music that does not mesh with the rest of the album (alright this might be a bit of an opinionated definition) but you know where I am trying to get here. Mother Earth is A Vicious Crowd, Waterboy, Take My Anthem are all powerful, emotional songs, that compare VERY favorably in effort musically and lyrically to the first part of the album. I don't think you can call that filler. I think BOP had some filler, in songs that said basically the same thing, the same way, over and over again (Everytime I See Your Face/Sweet Release/She). They don't have the same creative energy behind them that others on the album do. I think there was a danger to fall back into a lack of creativity in BOP, as it was "going back what Live does best/back to the basics", and the boys did to a degree. I think SFBM sounds much more creative, and I can't think of a filler song off the 30 sec stuff I have heard, but I could certainly be surprised when I hear the full songs.

In my opinion, Mental Jewelery was half filler tracks. After Mirror Song, the whole album is pretty much unlistenable for me. Throwing Copper has Horse, Waitress, Stage, and Dam at Otter Creek as tracks I just don't enjoy playing (save for a rare occasion). Also, I feel White Discussion is over-long and the worst single the band has ever released.
Secret Samadhi was the first album that I could listen to and enjoy every song all the way through. TDTH, V, and Birds of Pray are also albums were I enjoy listening to every song all the way through. From what I heard of Songs from Black Mountain, I don't hear one filler track, but thats just me.

To each his own.

Ok, my opinion on the fillers:

MJ: none. It was their first CD. They weren't trying to fill up the cd with crap. They wanted to gain recognition.
TC: none.
SS: Merica
TDTH: Sun, We Walk in the Dream
V: Like A Soldier, People Like You, Transmit Your Love, Flow, The Ride, OK, and maybe Hero of Love
BOP: She, Everytime I See Your Face, River Town, Out To Dry, Bring the People Together

Yeah, to each his own, but there are a few of those you can't really argue with.

While listening to the clips I realized that many of the new songs have keys in them...does that mean that LIVE will be touring with a keyboardist again?

I kind of like what I've heard so far. My only complaint is that the last 4 or 5 songs sound the same. Also Home sounds pretty bad from the 30 sec. I heard.

I know other people have commented on this, and it differs from each person. Dam at Otter Creek is one of my all time favorite Live songs. I agree with you on horse as a filler. MJ: I dont see any fillers in this album, especially in the 2nd half.

MJ: no fillers
TC: Horse
SS: Merica and Century
TDTH: We Walk in a Dream
V: I just don't like this album
BOP: She, Sweet Release, Bring the People Together
SFBM: The songs I've heard don't seem like fillers

wow... now that goes to show how different live fans can really be.

my opinion: 'she' and 'we walk in the dream' are two of the best songs live have EVER put out. 'sweet release' is pretty cool as well. and 'century'.

the difference of opinion is unreal. omg.gif

I just want to know if it's my headphones or if it's really this bad ... listen to the verse in Show, especially the words "secret space". Does it sound like a lisp? smile.gif He/she who mixed the vocals must have had too much of a love for the De-Esser (used corretctly = reduction of harsh S-sounds ... used poorly = singers has no front teeth smile.gif).

As I said: either it's time for new headphones or they should fix that, and soon! Show is one of the few songs that I actually like *dontchabemessingwiththat!*.

I always sort of went by the opinion that songs that the band didn't play on tour from an album were the ones that were filler. Not to say they're bad songs all the time, but the band at least would consider them not good enough to want to play for audiences.

I think this definitely contributes to a track being considered a filler.
(as you can see from the songs I listed previously in the thread)

That might make sense with most bands, but we all know that Live plays the same setlist regardless how they feel about the songs. lol.gif

I'm guessing they don't change the setlist cos those are the songs they really like .. which might suggest they could regard a lot of their material as filler, at least now in hindsight.

If they just didn't change the set to include some more of the lesser hits because they think the audience might not like it/know the songs then that's pretty weak .. they should have more faith in their fans. Or maybe they're just going with the big hits cos they want to gain more fans .. which is also silly cos you wouldn't go to the show if you wern't a fan (unless it was like the Nickelback deal where the majority of the audience isn't there for them).

So I just figured they're either just really lazy (don't anyone start on the "they have families now, no time to practice!!" cos that's bull) or they just don't think the rest of their material is worthy of playing live .. which is sad.

apparently lol. I take "She" and "Sweet Release" back as being fillers. I haven't listened to BOP in about a half of year and just listened to it now. They might not be my favorite songs, but they are definitely not fillers. I also take back "We Walk in the dream" I got it confused with "They Stood up for Love" Some Live fan I am lol... it's late... Okay so if you are still following "century" and "They Stood up for Love" are fillers, not She, Sweet Release, or We Walk in a Dream.

It's unreal! omg.gif lol

Century is one of my favorite songs, I dont think it is a filler at all. In my opinion every song on SS is amazing, not one is a filler in my book

I think my live-loving days are over. It was gonna happen regardless of how good this album ended up being- my tastes have just changed. I still respect their old material, and do still love some of the songs. But as for being a fan of the band, I think thats pretty much through.

For people that want to try some really interesting music, give Pain of Salvation- 'Be' a listen. A true progressive masterpiece.
