okay until yesterday i thought the two were the same (ketchup being what americans call tomato sauce) but i was browsing around at my shop and realised that Heinz have both Ketchup AND tomato sauce in their lineup. WTF???

i didnt have time to go through the ingredients to single out differences, but i just wanna know whats the difference, who likes which better, and why the fuck its taken me 23 years to figure this shit out!

Jesus. Australians are so freggin cute I can't stand it.

Us nutty Americans keep ketchup cold and use it for burgers & hotdogs (kids use it on everything) ... tomato sauce is hot & used for pasta, pizza, basically anything Italian.

Ketchup is thick & barely moves. Tomato sauce is more liquidy.

... or are you kidding & just waiting to see which stupid American actually replies? Great. Now I'm all paranoid.

In England, tomato ketchup is what you put on burgers, tomato sauce is what you heat up and put on pasta.

By the way, here you go for an explanation in Oz Heinz Australian Website

na uh, here tomato sauce is what we keep cold in the fridge and use on burgers and hot dogs and chips. And it seems what you call tomato sauce there, we call tomato soup or pasta sauce here, and you heat it up to make a bolognaise or other hot meals.

here they're called Heinz Big Red tomato sauce and Heinz Ketchup and it seems the difference is that ketchup has vinegar.

If we're talking pre-packaged, Heinz have a condensed tomato soup which is simply heated up on its own or used as a base for a sauce. But i guess a tomato based soup is just called tomato soup.

heres an interesting fact:

Ketchup was first called Kecap. Ketchup is similar to Tomato Sauce, but is thicker, richer & more spicy

im gonna buy some today to compare the difference

I won't touch the vileness that is tomato soup. We have a Heinz factory in my town and my step-dad used to do a lot of painting and decorating for them. He saw a tanker of it coming into be tinned accidentally spill all over the place and it actually brought the tarmac up off the road. If it can do that to tarmac, I shudder to think what it can do to your digestive system. lol.gif

yer well i tried the ketchup today, and while there is a slight difference in texture and colour to the Big Red tomato sauce, it really is just the same thing. Im actually quite disillusioned.

okay, ive taken the liberty to contact the heinz people and find out once and for all. Here is my email to them:

To the good people of Heinz,

As an advocat for www.fansoflive.com, the members are seeking your expertise, as well as other leading long-life goods manufacturers, to explain in comprehensible terms the difference between two of your most infamous products: Heinz Big Red Tomato Sauce and Heinz Ketchup, as we are struggling to differentiate the two.

It seems that both of these fabulous condiments are packaged, marketed and indeed intended to be used as a 'sauce' of such, served either with a hot dog, burger or "anything you can think of" as your label suggests. Is there in fact, any discernible difference between them?

My personal disillusionment over the matter has left me alienated, depressed, and above all hungry for a viable and satisfactory answer to my predicament. I am sure that other internet groups will rally to join our plight in finding the truth and, in doing so, enjoy these items with as much joy and fullfilment as i am sure you have intended. We hope your company's passion to become pioneers in leading the way towards shattering some of the myths and stereotypes surrounding Ketchup and Tomato Sauce, will end our pain and put the matter to rest.

Most respectfully

Mr. Wambangalang
