well i thought the new board needed a secret samadhi thread. this has to be one of the most haunted sounding albums ever. i remember being half a sleep one day listeing to this and i heard for the first time that little riff in ghost. i was just shocked that i missed it for so long. such a great riff to play. so simple and genius.

is it just my sight or does the merica letters look smaller than the other song titles on the cd case?

Yeah, I've been wondering about that too, but I think it just seems that way because it's the only title that doesn't start with a capital letter. Gas Hed Goes West seems really big (and Insomnia and the Hole in the Universe too, compared to Heropsychodreamer), but that's just a lot of little words with a lot of capitals...at least, that's what I think!
Compare the "e" 's, they all look the same size to me...

Hands down, Secret Samadhi was the last album that came out and really blew me away. Not just Live albums, either, ALL albums. It was such a departure from Throwing Copper in that it was so dark sounding. Still one of my faves today.

It's a decent album, but I think it was one of Live's worst efforts. It sounds to me like Live wanted desperately to not write Throwing Copper II, be mysterious and sound dark, and all of that comes off as very pretentious to me. It lacks the innate energy that all of their albums have, and feels the most awkward. That's one of the greatest assets SFBM has: it sounds like they really wanted to write those songs. SS sounds forced and lost.

Yeah, that's when I really started to become a Live fan, because they have such a diversity of sound. I remember hearing Lakinis Juice and Freaks for the first time, they just blew my mind.
My first ever concert was the 97 Secret Samadhi Tour at Perth Ent. Cent. First song was Rattlesnake and as soon as those lights burst on the stage with the intro I was hooked baby!!
I went out the next day and bought Mental Jewelry and started following Live from then on.
I'm about to get the Secret Samadhi 'Mask' tatooed on my arm! rockin.gif

yeh i agree with alex, SS is as beautiful as it is mysterious. SS brought out emotions for myself and i bet alot of other people different to those from Throwing Copper. Thus Live achieved what they set out to do. 'Gas Head goes West' Unbelieveable.

Um, no, that's actually a legit criticism of Samadhi. Focus on the issue, not the person. I happen to not agree with it at all, but it's valid. I'd be more apt to describe V as sounding "pretentious" and "awkward" and "forced and lost." But then again, I'd argue that was the intent, the voice of V, and they pulled it off well.

Secret Samadhi is a masterpiece and is my favorite album ever. Even outtakes from that era such as Cheetah are awesome.

I just wish there was a better studio version of that which doesn't sound like it is only coming through one speaker sad.gif

SS is my favourite Live album, and apart from 'merica and heropyschodreamer which I don't like as much as the others, I think SS is one of Lives least forced albums.
