I have heard people say pure source bootlegs are better quality than regular bootlegs? I don't think this is true. Could someone please explain the actual differences? Thanks.

Pure source refers to a recording that hasn't been encoded into lossy formats, such as mp3, ogg, etc. Files in FLAC and SHN formats compress aiff/wav files losslessly, so they are the most popular among the trading community (after decompressing these files, everything in the original aiff/wav file is still there). When files are encoded into mp3, the compression step throws away parts of the file that can never be recovered again (unlike the FLAC or SHN compression process), so there is a loss in quality and this is why mp3's are referred to as a "lossy" format. Therefore, pure source recordings will always be of better quality.

Ahh makes sense now. Weird though because one time I did a little experiment and downloaded an entire show in both mp3 and FLAC format. Sounded the same to me. Guess I'm not a pro so I wouldn't notice the differences. smile.gif

128kb mp3's sound disgusting- I find it hard to listen to them. There is quite a huge difference between WAV and mp3- and not only in file size.

I agree. I didn't really notice how shoddy they were until I got a new speaker system on my computer and played them on it.

My speakers suck regardless of what type of music file I'm listening to. I guess that's why I don't notice a difference. smile.gif

Check the link below. It lists FLAC programs at the top of the page (to uncompress your files to wavs) or players at the bottom of the page (to play the FLAC files withough uncompressing them).
