He wrote the riff. The story I recall from back in the day was that Ed left, he came up with it, and kept playing it until Ed returned so he could share it with him.

Chad Taylor talks about writing the Lakini's Juice riff here at 1:20 of the second video:

Here is a video of Zak with Ed's band playing Lakini's Juice at the Chameleon Club: https://youtu.be/DC2rS57pTjA

And here is Chad playing LJ at the same venue one week earlier: https://youtu.be/owrC3JJzz-8

I don't have a great ear for these things, but what is the primary difference you hear in the riff? If you blindfolded me I couldn't tell you which is better.

I also wonder if Zak played differently as the lead guitarist in Ed's band versus the rythym guitarist in Live. Zak definitely ran around the stage way more when he was the lead in Ed's solo band.

I'd say Chad played it correctly, and Zak tried to cover it. People doubt my ears, but it sure sounds different to me. And that's just the LJ riff, Loy's whole performance is meh

New album likely.

I don’t think it’s fair to judge between the two. They are not using the same guitar and probably have different amps and settings.

Chad has experimented with the equipment and sound when he created the riff. Definitely a reason that Zak won't create the same sound.
But mostly he's playing a highly nuanced riff intuitively whereas Zak is just trying to copy it - and it's sounding stiff.

A lot of people have been assuming that Līve is over, but the things that have been said publicly is that CT has been fired from the band. Well, if there was no band what would the need be to fire him? In fact, Ed said "he'll never stop the music again", which would indicate the opposite of the band being over. And CG has been nothing but determined that the show will go on.

And then there was this IG post:

https://www.instagram.com/p/CfNsHs6rpQ5/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=

I'm assuming the band is 100% moving forward until I see them say it isn't.

I'm also assuming Zak Loy will be the guitarist moving forward, but he may not be for whatever reason. If he weren't, I wonder who would take that job. An obvious candidate would be Adam K, but he might be the rhythm guy to take Ed's parts during shows. If they added another guitarist, even if just for live shows, who would you think it might need? Who would you like to see?

Every once in a while I check back in here and think to myself "oh well, nothing new".

Today is not one of those days.

This is a drummer lingo post, so unless you're a drummer or care about drum things, you may find this boring, but I had to share because I love you all. Yes, even you.

After seeing the pics of Gracey's kit and his drumsticks just hanging out in the picture, I, being the snoopy drummer that's shadowed CG's drums for some 20-odd years now, e-mailed Pro Mark last night and asked them what sticks he's using these days. I already knew that he's using their "ActiveGrip" line, but I wanted to know exactly what model, since the ones that us plebs can purchase aren't like his, and I was right. They replied this morning, which was super cool of them.

Here are the dimensions: 16" long, .551" thick, oval tip. They're special made for him, and they won't sell them to the public. I'll never understand drumstick endorsements, but whatever. They could have made a mint off me if they sold those publicly, but I digress.

The closest match would be the Mike Portnoy model, though that one is .5" longer and slightly thicker at .565", but closer to a traditional 5A stick. Their suggestion was the Rich Redmond model, which is the same length at 16", but way thicker at .595" as a 5B stick, and IMO, not even close. I think they recommended that one because it's got the red stripe like CG's has, but I prefer a thinner stick. YMMV. I own both of those models and far prefer the Mike Portnoy one.

So, if you ever want CG's sticks, good luck catching one at a future show or buying it off eBay, if they ever appear there. I couldn't tell you the last time I saw a CG stick for sale there.
