.. to bands that play music somewhere in the genre of Life of Agony to Type O Negative to Tool and APC.

Any recommendations?

Bloody hell - Life Of Agony are nothing like Type O Negative or Tool. What do you want, a band that sound like all 4 together or individually? LOA sound like Velvet Revolver (or should I say VR stole LOA's sound), Type O sound like Sisters Of Mercy or Joy Division crossed with Black Sabbath and Tool sound like... well, Tool. And APC sound like... Tool if they kept their songs to under 15 minutes.

It's just struck me that Type O's 'I don't wanna be' me sounds an awful like Black Sails In The Sunset or Art Of Drowning era AFI except AFI are better musicians. I love Type O but they do fucking suck from a technical point - which is part of their charm.

Heh.. yeah, I know they're all different, so what I really meant something in between those. Or.. like you said individually maybe. I don't like VR though.

Hm.. SOM are more gothic pop-ish though while Type O are more on the gothic metal side.

I've heard good things about AFI, maybe I'll check them out, together with Black Sails. Thanks for mentioning these.

Edit: Oops, seems Black Sails in the Sunset is an AFI album. lol

AFI are weird - the first time I heard them I though AAAGHWHATTHEBLOODYFUCKISTHATFUCKINGSHIT! Then found myself wanting to listen to it again - they're definitely one of those bands that rewards you for repeated listening. Now I'm addicted. They seem to do that to me with every album. They started off hardcore punk and I can't get into their very first stuff. They were still pretty punk on Black Sails then showed a bit more variety on Art Of Drowning. Then there was Sing The Sorrow which is amazing - actually that might be more your cup of tea as it's more 'gothic'. And Decemberunderground is due out who's sound is totally is unrecognizable from BSITS - it's very 80's pop but in a really good way. I got a leak of it and have been listening to it non stop for days.

p.s. It's only fair to warn you that Davey sounds NOTHING like Pete Steele - he's a screamer rather than a growler.

uh-oh, a screamer...

which is one of the things that makes it difficult for me to like a band, even if the musicianship is good.

Anyway, I'd still check them out. Who knows, I might be in for a surprise?

He doesn't scream all the time - like Pete doesn't do that deep goth voice all the time.

And the drummer is one of my musical heroes.

They don't really have too much in common with the bands you mentioned (though they do appeal much of the time to fans of Tool), but:

Porcupine Tree.

Ok, I've listened to some afi songs already, and I quite like some of what I've heard. I need to listen more this weekend. Also, somebody gave me an 'advance' copy of their upcoming album, but I haven't listened to it yet.
